  • Perfect for Practice at a Good Price
Style: AC30
The AC30 AmPlug is excellent for practice, with adequate sound at a great price. It's not perfect. The little control wheels on top are delicate and have settings 1-10 but that's aspirational. The gain, for example, fuzzes out above 5, so leave it at 5. You want to protect your ears, anyway. The tone control goes muddy on bass, so keep it balanced at 5 and use the guitar's tone control. I use JBL earbuds and the sound is clear and completely satisfactory. The FX are discriminable: chorus, delay, and reverb, which is pretty amazing in such a small device, but don't expect too much. The "Modes" (which not documented in the "documentation" sheet that comes well-hidden in the packaging -- you have to look online to discover these modes), are three degrees of distortion, from clean to dirty. I use clean mode almost exclusively to reduce my Telecaster's natural twang while I practice and learn. Technically there are 9 effects then, Mode x FX, though many of them seem about the same and some are close to pink noise. Keep in mind what you're buying: A portable practice amp for $40. You have to look for online videos to figure out what the different Vox models do because the verbal descriptions are bland and uninformative. I think I might have preferred the "Clean" or the "Blues" model, and I may get one of those, but the AC-30 is the one-size fits all solution for somebody who needs a portable practice amp. The Vox Amplug is not a refined enough device for you to be honing your instrument's voice on it, so don't overthink all the settings. For developing your guitar's voice, you should be using a serious practice amp. This is just a little gizmo so you can practice your pentatonic scales without driving your family crazy. I recommend a 3 to 6-foot cable, 1/4" male-to-female, so you can "externalize" the Vox box and have it beside you or in your lap. When it's plugged directly into the guitar, it's hard to see and use, probably upside-down, and you'll likely break it when you store the guitar. If you want to get tricky, you can plug a Bluetooth transmitter into the Vox and route the sound to wireless headphones/buds. I'm not sure what that would do to sound quality. The device also has an Aux-in jack so you could route an .mp3 backing track through it. I haven't tried that. Overall, the Vox AC30 does the job and is well-worth the price. ... show more

  • Tiny. Powerful. Sounds incredible.
Style: Blues
Whats not to like about this tiny device? Its a Vox amp in your pocket. You can walk around your house with your guitar and a pair of headphones entirely isolated in a world of beautiful amplified guitar tones. I found the setup to be super easy, and very easy to find good tones on my Blues version of the Amplug. The gain selector is pretty straightforward and exactly what an amp owner would expect from them. The interplay is between the gain dial and the gain switch itself. Therein you'll find something for you. The effects are cool, the least interesting is the flanger/chorus which to me doest sound that great. Tinny and a little weird. The reverb setting is great on all levels. The echo is fun as well, but not really a good substitute for a true echo pedal. But get one please. Its an amazing tool to practice without disturbing people, also the ability o practice at cranked levels! Your family may be cool with you playing/practicing at room levels, but what about stage level? This device can simulate that fairly well. And for $40 its ridiculous to not get a few. NOTE: I also got the mini cabinet and it sounds great. As someone else said, perfectly loud enough to play along with a friend on acoustic. ... show more

  • Awesome little tool for quiet playing
Style: Bass
Bought this to let me plug my headphones into my bass for night playing. Works really well and I like the effects options. I will say the device itself is a bit delicate so be careful - seems like it could easily break

  • Clean with Reverb
Style: Clean
This is a great little amp! Absolutely worth the money. I've had it for about three weeks now. Lots of positives and only a few minor complaints below. - Use: I use it with headphones but you can also plug it into the aux input on your regular amp to hear it out loud without headphones (with an 1/8" stereo to 1/8" stereo jack.) - Settings: It has three amp settings and three effects. The three amp settings are: clean, a little gain and more gain. The three effects are reverb, more reverb and reverb with echo. COMPLAINT: The first setting is supposed to be effects off, but it still has some reverb. - Controls: it has volume, gain and tone. Even at high gain, there's not much break up, except on the more gainy amp setting. COMPLAINT: the numbers on the dials are small. It's a bit of an eyesight test, especially if you're older like me. - Battery life: I tend to use it about 30 min per day on average and two AAA batts last several days to a week. - Sound Quality: The sound quality is excellent. The reverb sounds really good. - Build Quality: I've accidentally dropped it more than once and it didn't come apart or stop working. - Ease of use (settings): It has an LED to let you know which amp setting it's on. COMPLAINT: There's nothing to let you know which effect setting you're on. Every time I use it, I feel like I have to click through all three to figure out which one I'm on, and since every setting seems to have reverb, it's hard to tell if I'm on the least-reverb setting which is what I usually want. - Ease of use (physical): It plugs directly into the output jack on the guitar, and you can angle it around so it sits nicely. On my strat and 335 style, it sits really nicely and I can see what the dials are reading. COMPLAINT: On my tele, it sits kind of underneath and is less easy to adjust. It all depends on where the output jack is on the guitar. In addition, just plugging it in it's easy to move the dials and hit buttons accidentally, so you do have to look at it after you plug it in. - CAUTION: Turn it on BEFORE you put your headphones/buds in. It has that very loud pop that most amps have when turning on. ... show more
