  • Great lens after I updated the firmware
Size: 33mm F1.4 M-mount
Out of the box this lens was causing my M50 Mark II to freak out but had no issues in my M200. I figured there was a firmware upgrade for it and apply it to see if that fixed the problem and indeed it did. Let’s talk about that firmware upgrade for a second. I gotta admit they make the process super easy just download the firmware plug in a USB micro cable into the lens and drop a file into the drive that appears on your computer. Sit back, wait and then you’re done. Once I got the firmware updated I had a chance to try it on both cameras and each one worked perfectly with this lens. Comparing this to the 32 mm canon lens which I also have the clarity is pretty good. The Cannon lens is a bit sharper, if you’re really looking at the edges, however, this lens is significantly cheaper and now both my wife and I can be using a lens of this size at the same time and not have to keep swapping lenses with each other. In regards to the auto focus, it was fairly fast and it was very quiet while recording video and setting the focus to different parts using the touchscreen there was no audible sound recorded on the video using the cameras built-in microphones. This is especially important on my m200 because it does not have a microphone input jack. So overall, if you’re looking for a camera lens of this size for a good price, this is an excellent choice. ... show more

  • Perhaps my favorite lens for the Canon M6ii
Size: 33mm F1.4 M-mount
Am extremely pleased with this lens. First I'll say that, having upgraded the firmware as instructed, my Canon M6ii mirrorless body stores all the precise exif info into the Raw/JPG metadata files. But most importantly, this lens has allowed me to take what are perhaps the most beautiful family pics of any lens I've currently got (22m/f2, 55-200mm, kit zoom 15-55mm). For portraits, it's absolutely beautiful - colors, bokeh, sharp focus, open aperture. The 33mm equates to around 55mm on a full frame, so it's an incredibly useful eyeful of composition. Its construction is full metal - built like a tank - but not so heavy that it lugs down the otherwise small, lightweight body of the M6ii, which is exactly what I was looking for. I've been so impressed, I've been thinking about buying the 23mm and/or the 56mm... but I already have the Canon 22/f2, so the 23mm would just be an essentially larger, heavier prime. The 56mm, on the other hand is tempting, now that I know the quality of the 33mm. The autofocus works beautifully, and you can set the aperture either manually with the near-to-body ring, or leave it on Auto - and either set it manually with the camera body itself, or let the camera do its thing (e.g., it shooting in shutter priority). Anyhow, couldn't be more pleased with this lens, and the price makes it a real bargain. EDIT: After two months of practical use, I can reiterate that this is a 5-star purchase for me. Today I did a pixel expanded side-by-side match with my "kit" lens 15-45mm set to 33mm exactly and on a tripod took identical auto-focused shots at apertures from one end of the spectrum of each lens to the other... The Viltrox took slightly better quality sharpness images in the center, but at the edges/corners, the Viltrox was superbly better than the Canon 15-45mm kit EFM lens ... hand down. What's more, despite featuring the same 100 ISO in every shot, the Viltrox often took a shot at a slightly faster shutter speed even when matching the same f/ stop. In other words, Canon is being a bit more generous than Viltrox in setting their ISO calibration (which some manufacturers are known to do to suggest a more impressive performance on the stat sheet). In short, toe to toe comparison at 33mm against the 15-45mm zoom kit lens, I'd prefer the quality of the image from the Viltrox every time. The only consideration here that I can't account for here is that the Canon is a zoom, whereas the Viltrox is a prime, which ought to perform better all else equal. ... show more

  • Great Lens, Great Value!
The Viltrox 23mm f1.4 is one of those lenses that every Canon M-Mount user needs. Build quality is absolutely amazing with an all-metal design. Even the lens hood is metal. Physically, the lens has a really premium feel. I grew up shooting film and I genuinely enjoy having a physical aperture ring to control the aperture manually. Another huge bonus is the USB mount on the bottom of the lens which allows for easy firmware updates. In terms of autofocus, the lens is quick and responsive in both stills and video mode. Viltrox does a great job of learning other camera manufacturers’ autofocus algorithms and it shows. It’s genuinely impressive considering they’re making these lenses for Canon’s M-Mount, Sony’s E-Mount and Fuji’s X-Mount. That’s three very different systems, with three very different autofocus styles and Viltrox has still managed to get it right every time. Image quality of the 23mm f1.4 is genuinely good. Images are sharp even at f1.4 with maximum sharpness coming in around f4.0. Color rendition is great in both stills and video. And all of this comes in a lens that’s literally half the price of most other lenses for this system. Overall, the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 is great value for the money. I definitely recommend checking out this lens! ... show more

  • If you have a compatible camera.. DONT MISS OUT!!
Bought this as my first prime lens for my Canon M50 MkII and for this price, it’s really hard to say no. First off, the packaging Viltrox provides is very sturdy and almost premium-like, providing not only the lens itself, but also a lens hood and a carrying case (both are also great quality). The lens itself feels premium with a metallic and weighty feel to it with a smooth focus and aperture ring (even though the auto focus is also very good). Photos I provided should give you a decent idea as to what this lens can do. Great all around but specifically excels at low light and object focused portraits. If you’re thinking about getting this lens, I’d say do it! ... show more
