  • Feels and looks good
Style: Illuminated Wired Keyboard
I had an older backlit keyboard that suddenly lost the typing function for a couple of keys. I tried a YouTube tutorial on how to fix the keys, but I could not restore my keyboard. I then ordered a "gaming" backlit keyboard from Amazon that was horrible -- the keys started wearing off immediately, and several keys just had blobs on them (the letters were completely illegible) after two months. I looked again for a backlit keyboard and settled on this Verbatim (model 99789). So far, I have been using it extensively for nearly two months, and it looks & feels great. It makes some noise, but it is quieter than many keyboards. The backlighting is a pleasant white color (not the rainbow of colors that the "gaming" keyboard had), and is just the right intensity. It is often in the dark early hours of the day when I'm at this keyboard, with the room lights off, and the backlighting is just right. There is just one intensity for the backlighting, so if its intensity is not right for you, there is only an on/off switch for the backlighting. (See my photo for the backlight switch.) I like the touch and feel of this Verbatim keyboard. I also like that it has dedicated volume up/down keys, so that I can easily control headphone volume -- and those keys are backlit and easy-to-find as well. Overall, after nearly two months of use, I really like this Verbatim keyboard. I recommend it. Updated review after 10 months' use: This keyboard has worn quickly. The letters on several of the keys have worn quickly and are completely obliterated. In particular, the N, M, L, O, and C keys are completely unreadable, and the D, K and H keys are not far behind. (See my photo of the obliterated keys.) In addition to the letters wearing off, the space bar is acting oddly, often giving me spaces I don't want. Yes, this was a cheap keyboard, the cheapest backlit keyboard I could find. But it is badly wearing out after less than one year. I am lowering my 5-star initial rating to 1-star. ... show more

  • Inexpensive Keyboard / Mouse with Some Quirks
Style: Wired Keyboard/Mouse
The price was very good for this combination of keyboard and mouse. The mouse and keyboard both work, but there are some disappointing features. Some keys on the keyboard are located in a strange place. There are "extra" keys (Power Sleep and Pause Break) located above the home, end, keys so the Home, End, Page, etc keys are pushed down a row. At first I found myself hitting the Scroll Lock key instead of the Home key, but now I am paying more attention. The added keys were not necessary and caused a functional issue. Another reviewer mentioned the backspace key--I should have paid more attention to their gripe. The key is located on the top row and is small like the other keys--I am not used to its location or size and these issues make it difficult to use. One final item is that the NumLock, and Caps have features that light up, but they are difficult to see. It maybe due to the angle I am seeing them, and this would have been a plus except that it doesn't function very well. Other than these issues the keys have a great feel to them, are responsive and provide good feedback. The mouse is rather small and better suited for a laptop due to its compact size. The slick finish also makes it more difficult to hold. The rubber-coated scroll button feels firm and responds easily. ... show more

  • A good basic illuminated keyboard.
Style: Illuminated Wired Keyboard
Had been using the Logitech K740 for a while, but they tend to break key caps and they're not replaceable. So I've gone through three or four of them in the last few years. Wanted to find something similar, but less expensive and not a gamer keyboard with tons of extra buttons or the general backlighting that shows in the key gaps as well as under the key caps. Stumbled on this Verbatim keyboard and decided to give it a try. It was less than half the cost of the Logitech, which was also appealing. They keys have a much sturdier feel - they don't give the impression they will come off any time soon, even with rapid typing. The basic white LED backlighting is under the key cap only, although it's not 100% coverage and keys with a lot of lettering have some loss at the edges... not a big deal for me. The lighting has three levels as well as off, so you can find the level of illumination that suits you best. There are some basic auxiliary keys for media (play, rewind, etc.) and volume, and a couple of hot keys for page=back and page-forward as well as browser home page and email. These are well out of the way of the main keys and won't get hit accidentally like some gamer boards I tested. The keys have a solid but quiet feel, with good response to finger pressure. All in all, this proved to be a great buy for me over the much higher-priced Logitech. ... show more

  • Keys Faded and Are Barely Visibile After 3 Months of Use, Lasted Only 6 Months
Style: Illuminated Wired Keyboard
I ordered this keyboard on July 17, 2020. The paints on many of the keys started to fade quickly. On October 15, after about three months of light use, the paints became illegible. By mid-November of 2020, the space bar has failed. So this keyboard lasted four months. In late January of 2021, I threw away this keyboard and replaced it with a Corsair keyboard. ... show more
