Description

The compact, lightweight, and versatile high magnification Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5x Ultra Macro lens from Venus Optics is specially designed with an extended working distance (45mm at 2x and 40mm at 2.5x). It is optimized for macro shooting between 2.5X – 5X life size and allows sufficient lighting on the object for easier shooting in the field. This 25mm lens is developed for both professional and leisure macro photography and is ideal for use in the field or indoor set-ups.Greater-Than-Life-Size ImageryDedicated to extreme close-up imaging, this lens is a specialized macro lens for photographing subjects at magnifications greater than life-size. Specifically developed for macro photography, this lens is designed for use within a 2.5:1 to 5:1 magnification range for producing greater-than-life-size imagery. This Laowa lens has a minimum focus distance of just 6.8-inch at the 5:1 magnification along with a comfortable 1.6-inch working distance. It is carefully designed to extend the short working distance of traditional 25mm lens in order to provide sufficient room for lighting hitting the subject.Superb Optical DesignComplementing the close-up capabilities, the optical design incorporates 8 elements in 6 groups with an extra-low dispersion element to deliver an unprecedented corner to corner sharpness. This dispersion element reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations for a high degree of clarity. The Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Macro Lens has one of the smallest and lightest barrel of lenses and allows more light to gather on subject and convenient to use in fields.Higher Magnification RangeWide-angle design with magnification range from 2.5 to 5X benefits the high magnification design by providing greater depth of field compared to lenses with telephoto or longer focal lengths.

  • There are no electronic contacts, so the lens can't talk to the camera at all!
Size: Canon EF Mount
Regarding Venus Optics Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra-Macro Lens: The first thing I noticed was that there are no electronic contacts on the base of the lens, so the lens can't talk to the camera at all! This is a really cheaply constructed lens. The next thing I (as a long time pro photographer) notice, is that in order to shoot at f/11 at 1/250th in broad, sunny daylight at noon, you have to have your ISO set to 1600. What this tells me is that the apertures marked on the lens are not even close to accurate. If this was really f/11 my ISO in noon daylight ought to be around 160, not 1600! So you will either need considerably more light than the noon sun, or you will have grainy shots, on all your shots. Next, this lens is a super close macro lens, so close that if you had a wasp to photograph, he would not even fit in the frame, at your widest zoom. This can be good, if you want just super small things, but you should understand that this is almost a micro lens. Because it is so close-up, your depth of field at f/16 is only about the thickness of a single grain or salt. This is to be expected for such a super-macro lens, but again, for most people this will be too small and too difficult to work with. The biggest two issues are stated above but I'll say them again, the f-numbers on the lens are wrong and exaggerated to make it sound like it has good low light capabilities, it most certainly does not! They could have included a nice little diode ring light that they make for this lens, but they did not, and I can't actually find anywhere to buy it. But you could greatly use it on every shot with this lens. f/2.8 is more like f/11 and f/16 is really about f/128, and because there are no electronic contacts, you don't get to view things through the lens' maximum aperture, you have to view through whatever tiny iris opening you have dialed-in... so the low light capabilities really suck- you could say the lens only works in bright daylight. Another thing that sucks is no vibration reduction whatsoever, again, as I said, this is a cheap-built lens. I will say that the optics (if you dial in an ISO above 1600) are capable of some nicely focused images, though the depth-of field is very shallow even at the smallest apertures. An imperfect lens, but it still has some usefulness if you know enough about photography to work within its limited feature set. I've included a close-up of part of a small feather, this was shot at the widest zoom, so you can get closer, but you can't go wider. It only focuses out to about two or 3 inches, maximum. So now you know what this lens is about. I think I've stated all the information you need, to know if this lens will work for you. ... show more

  • Gets close, but so do you
Size: Nikon F Mount
I have had fun exploring the world of macro photography, using a 60mm and 100mm macro lens, as well as extension tubes... but this lens gets you so much closer without needing to combo anything. The downside is the subject in frame is not the only thing closer. You are always going to be around an inch or less from your subject so living creatures are difficult to snap photos of in focus. You can narrow the aperture to make the field of view bigger but then you lose a lot of light and have to keep the shutter open longer to compensate, or increase your ISO... or both. Lots of juggling. I bought the ring light made specifically for this lens on ebay(only place I can find it currently) and it helped tremendously but not sure I'll do much free hand photography with this lens. The two images attached are my first attempts at focus stacking with this particular lens. The body shot of the stinkbug is 45 images stacked and the head is 25 images stacked. It makes since at this level of magnification why the pros are shooting over 100 images, because as you can see I neglected some spots and thus it isn't sharp from front to back. That being said... if you stack it enough, this lens will put out some super sharp images. You can even do it without a focus rail because of how stiff the focus ring is on the lens. It turns smooth but is very stiff so that you can make tiny adjustments. I'll probably still keep using the focus rail I have anyway but it is nice knowing that the focus ring isn't going to slip at all. The lens is also entirely manual but for this level of photography auto-focus wouldn't really be beneficial anyway. ... show more

  • Incredible with the right practice
Size: Nikon F Mount
This is my first macro lens and I'm new to the macro scene. I was hesitant to buy at first because of a lack of reviews, but decided to try it out anyways. Build quality is surprisingly sturdy. It's arguably the best built of any other lens I have. Very tight tolerances. Macro at this scale has a learning curve, and this lens is completely manual. This means you adjust aperture manually and need a focus rail for focus stacking on anything. Manual is preferred at this magnification, personally. I didn't know how to use it properly at first, and had to invest in more gear (ie a focus rail/macro slider, very sturdy tripod, third hand clips) to get results I was happy with. Once I figured this thing out, it was able to produce incredible shots. I'm using mine with a full frame DSLR. A crop sensor DSLR would definitely increase magnification. If you're looking for something to wander the wilderness with, this might be a bit hard to work with due to the shallow depth of focus. At this level of magnification it's incredibly thin and you need to get very close to your subject at 1:1 magnification. In the attached photo, I took this in a studio environment with a completely static subject. But if you need EXTREME macro that's on par with a low power microscope, this is your lens. When taking your shots, try to keep your light sources BEHIND the eye of the lens; it catches a nasty glare otherwise. I also recommend using good lighting and a sturdy base for your subject, very subtle movement can still cause blur. You will absolutely need a delayed or remote shutter. All of the aforementioned issues are based on user performance, and not the gear itself. This is some fantastic glass, you just need to use it right.
