Description

Designed to provide a wealth of control over out-of-focus quality and to enhance bokeh, the Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus Lens from Venus Optics is a short telephoto prime designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras. The unique optical design incorporates an apodization (APD) element, as well as two separate diaphragms—8- and 14-blade—to provide separate adjustment over the bokeh as well as the exposure and depth of field. This APD element functions as a radially graduated neutral density filter, and as such limits the light transmission to a T-stop value of 3.2, while permitting the depth of field and selective focus qualities of a true f/2 design.

  • Looks promising but will require work to learn
This lens may well be the most difficult to use properly of any I have ever used in my 55 years in the hobby. The 'exposure triangle' (Shutter, aperture, ISO) gains a new consideration with the smooth trans focus control making the user responsible to select how the out of focus regions are presented beyond the usual with aperture control. It looks like a great learning experience but probably not one for some people. The lens is manual focus but I have done a lot with manual focus. The lens is heavy and built like a tank. For a reason I fail to understand, Laowa attached a 'chip' on the back of the mount that was supposed to identify the lens to the body and give limited EXIF data BUT these prevent the lens from working on most Canon cameras. It is simple to cover this with tape or just scrape it off. I am told that Sony cameras make use of this chip when the Canon EF version is adapted to Sony mount.Amazon asks us to rate things the day after it was received. Ask be again in six months and I can tell you how things are progressing. This most definitely is NOT the lens choice for someone who insists that everything be automatic. Good things come to those willing to put in extra effort and I hope to prove to be up to the challenge. Is that what you want? • It's great and annoying!
I got the Canon version and the electronic connection doesn't work on the 5dS. I had to put tape over it to get it to work. It's also easy to use the wrong apurture set since you have both tstop and fstops. The bokeh and sharpness of this lens makes up for it though. No can or distortion either. Perfect image quality. ... show more
