I love this blend by Death Wish Coffee. It's bold without tasting burnt. Strong in flavor and in caffeine but low in acidity. If the vikings had been the ones to discover coffee, I imagine it would taste just like this.

I've purchased this coffee on two separate occasions now. This coffee tastes great. My favorite is Kicking Horse Coffee- Kick Ass, because it is under $1.00/oz and tastes very good. This Valhalla Java blend is better, but I hesitate to say it's worth the added cost for me. Although I don't plan on buying this coffee consistently, I will likely buy it again because it does taste very good. Pros: Great flavor at the recommended water to coffee ratio. (2 1/2T to 6oz water) Cons: Cost is high. At the recommended 2 1/2 tablespoons per 6oz serving, you end up going through this 12oz bag faster than normal. Feels like the caffeine level is higher than I'm used to, which I'm not particularly fond of. ... show more

I have previously purchased the types of coffee brands that promise elevated levels of caffeine. When I do enjoy them, I get similar experiences to that of drinking this Valhalla Java by Death Wish Coffee. While I have no scientific data to provide that supports this is a normal experience, I can at least relay to you my reaction and anticipate it will mirror your own. Firstly, I did receive a fresh dated package from Amazon. I opened it right away and poured it into an air-tight canister. The beans had a nice fresh, though not overwhelming scent. Upon grinding and brewing in my Technivorm, I tasted my first cup. It was smooth, as others had reported. No acidity or bitter taste. I could definitely sense that this was bold. Has a very nice flavor on par with some of the best brands I have tried. As far as giving a jolt, this coffee really doesn't. That's not to say that there isn't an escalated amount of caffeine here. It's just that my reaction is different from this coffee over others. No jitters or internal heart pounding whatsoever. Instead, a heightened sense of alert with more calmness. What I do notice is a huge crash hours later -- to the point that I feel very groggy and my head starts to hurt a little. It's as if my brain is craving for caffeine. I don't get that type of reaction when drinking regular coffee whereas I come off the caffeine in a more subtle manner. I don't know whether to consider this type of reaction a plus or minus. I mean, you get a great tasting cup of coffee that is right up there with the better available brands. You do get a nice caffeine rush free of jitters. I think the negative is the crash and burn that comes later down the road. Your reaction may vary, but enjoy a delicious cup and see for yourself. ... show more

The product in question here is a coffee known as Valhalla Java, which is from a company called Death Wish Coffee. There are many dark roast varieties out there, but none can claim to be darker than the night before the coming of Ragnarok. Upon beginning to open the bag, faint Viking war drums encompassed my apartment. Once the seal was broken, Mjolnir, Thor's hammer, thundered down into the Earth as my senses were transported to visions of walking across the great bridge towards Asgard, and the palace of Odin the Allfather. The beans are of a quality that could only have come from the rich soils beneath the World Tree Yggdrasil, and upon starting to grind them, massive bolts of lightning tore fantastically across the sky, putting on a light show more brilliant than any fireworks display. The sky was lit up with the very silhouettes of the Norse gods themselves this night. Deep, rich aromas fill my nostrils as the brewing process begins, filling my cup with what appears to be the Black Blood of the Earth, the nectar of the Allfather. I feel as if I am being prepared to fight for the Aesir, and a Valkyrie will shortly be here to claim my soul for the war. The Jotun, Fenrir, the Mighty Midgard serpent, Jormungand, Nidhug and all manner of Norse age monster all seem but weaklings as I take my first sip of the purely magical concoction. This stuff packs a kick, but goes down surprisingly smooth for such a dark roast. Coffee in hand, I am prepared to make my final stand. Aside from this ridiculous review, in short, get your hands on some of this coffee. It is very rich, smells delightful and goes down crazy smooth. I drink a ton of coffee, and the effects of caffeine don't really seem to take a hold of me, but this stuff is quite magical, as I'm feeling quite the surge of alertness, like I could intercept someone trying to break into my apartment while they were still 50 meters away by power bombing them into the night soil with the fury in which Thor throws Mjolnir. It's that good. I will definitely be ordering another bag before this one is used up. ... show more
