Description

A radical approach to dreams and dreamwork rooted in our bodies, communities, and ecosystems. Undertorah takes readers on a journey through the root systems of the dreamworld. Drawing on a deep knowledge of ancient Jewish dream practice, world wisdom traditions, and contemporary ecotheology, this hybrid work of mystical scholarship combines personal narrative, multi-voiced oral history, and a somatic alternative to more symbolic methods of dream interpretation. A practical and paradigm-shifting guidebook for individuals and communities, Undertorah offers a transformative approach to contemporary dreamwork, grounded in embodied experience and ancestral wisdom, that connects us to spirit and inspires us to heal our world. • Transformational!
I found this book transformational in my understanding of dreams and dreaming, a way to see, feel the depth and understand, beyond my current knowledge. When I began reading this book, I was transfixed and could not put it down. My view was expanded like looking at the stars, then feeling and knowing, the space between and beyond. I wish I could have a conversation with YOU and encourage you to pick up this book and see for yourself, the brilliance of Jill Hammer. ... show more

  • a transformational book for those who dare to dream (in waking and sleeping hours)
A transformational book that has shifted both my orientation to dreams and my understanding of how our dreams impact our lives. For decades I have recorded my dreams, especially the ones that stood out to me as important. Undertorah provided me with a new landscape, and a new lens to approach dream work by helping me tune into the wisdom that lies beneath the surface of the more subtle or seemingly mundane dreams. In the short time since reading the book, my relationship to dreaming has changed. Rather than looking for the big symbolic dreams, I am now tuning into the color and texture of dreams I would not have noticed before. I am receiving clear wisdom that I can integrate into my life. I am deeply struck by the wealth of knowledge we all have access to if we could harness the power of our dreams in this way. It is my hope that many will read this book, and that we healers, educators, justice seekers, dreamers who dream of a different world in our waking hours will hold dream circles in our communities so that we may remember, as our ancestors knew, how to integrate our sleeping dreams into our waking visions for this world. ... show more

  • Deep Dreams as Poetry
Rabbi Jill Hammer has done it again! How she has managed to keep the Spirit flowing through so many wonderful books is amazing. Her Sisters at Sinai found cracks in our Torah and filled them with great midrashim. Her Book of Days found the spaces in our calendar and filled them with dates to celebrate and remember..... and now her Undertorah has found the spaces in our consciousness - and she brings our dreams to fill them. Rabbi Jill brings ancient texts to ground her work in Jewish tradition, yet she takes us through a system of making meaning of the places, people, guardians..- even our nightmares that we dream -in this new book. Her focus is on healing and finding the message of Spirit/Divine presence that calls to us from the deep. This book is a journey in itself and has stimulated my dream life already....Jill studies dreams as Torah, and invites us to interpret them to find the divine wisdom. I'm in..sign me up for a dream circle:) R. Rayzel Raphael ... show more

  • This book is a dream!!
I found this to be the most captivating and easy to read of all of Rabbi Jill Hammer’s books. I am loving this style of dream practice and its roots in Judaism. With a PhD in Clinical Psychology, I have learned to interpret dreams as part of the individual psyche. It is blowing my mind to understand the collective nature of dreaming and the spiritual, as well as psychological, meanings possible. I joined a dream circle and hope to continue this practice lifelong. Thank you Rabbi Jill Hammer for this roadmap into the unknown. Oh, and the pages are so beautifully printed, on thick paper -- they feel like a treasure all their own! ... show more

  • Sorry, sorely disappointed
I bought UNDERTORAH, and devoured it when it arrived, because I also have RETURN TO THE PLACE and have but the highest regard for that publication. Sadly, I do not have the same high regard for UNDERTORAH. UNDERTORAH fails where most "dream" books fail, by giving personal examples to reach a generality when dreams truly are personal. Frankly, I am not much interested in what Amy dreamed, or Francesca, or Miriam. Their dreams are their dreams, and my dreams are mine. And, sadly too, the section on forming your own "dream circle" was close to malpractice. Rabbi Hammer may be well qualified to lead such a group; 99.99% of the rest of us are not. Period. To tell group members to "not judge" is simply unrealistic. People are judgemental, whether they say so or not. It takes a tremendous amount of training and experience to effectively lead a group as intimate as this, and a very unique collection of people to make it successful. What I was hoping for was an approach similar to that in RETURN TO THE PLACE, i.e., Present some options for prayers and practices that lead to dreams, then present questions that help us understand our own dreams. There was a glimpse of this approach, but not nearly enough. The list of references at the end does not validate the book; on the contrary, it presents a hodgepodge of ideas. Please, Rabbi Hammer, study the subject then present us with YOUR insights on how we can make Life better. Nobody does that better than you, and in this book you have given away your authority. ... show more

  • Mystical and Practical Approach to Dreams
Jill Hammer's book synthesizes different approaches to dream in a clear and helpful way. She helps dreamers understand different layers of dreams and how they can tell you about yourself and the world. At the same time, she gives the reader a mystical framework that puts dream at the spiritual center of the soul. And, her brilliant, clear writing is a joy to read. ... show more
