  • Nice Hobby-Level Engraver
Size: 5500mW
I bought this engraver to try with some wooden nameplates for Thanksgiving, and some race medals. It was easy to set up and LastGRBL (the freely available control program) is pretty easy to use (though I should note I work in tech). I didn’t cut out the wooden leaves in the picture with the engraver, so I can’t review that feature (I purchased them precut elsewhere on Amazon), but I did use the engraver to burn the text, and as you can see it did a clean, accurate job. Each leaf took a few minutes to engrave (they’re about 3” across, for reference), and it was easy to align them after the first one by using a rough outline cut from cardboard, taped to the garage floor beneath the engraver (because then I could just drop the next leaf in the cutout and click go). The medals were a little less successful. You can see in the picture of back of the medallion itself (made of some typical, anodized cheap metal alloy) that even after many passes on different settings and heights (including some early, poorly aligned attempts), the text was not clear enough on the back of the medal to really be worth anything (you can barely see it). A friend told me that painting the back of the medal black before engraving may have fixed that problem, but I didn’t try that. Instead, I bought self-adhesive black metal plates (the circular plate pictured, used for making phones work with magnetic mounts, etc.) and engraved those. They came with a thin plastic-like coating on them, and I engraved through that to reduce scatter, then removed the coating after engraving. I will note that doing so produced some likely toxic smoke, so I wore a respirator mask while engraving, but the resulting text was pretty clean (though not as nicely contrasted as the wood). All-in-all, I was pleased with the value of the tool, as it is substantially cheaper than the next level option, and is probably quite suitable to light-duty hobby engraving (especially on wood or leather, I would be careful with plastic or other glossy materials, and you may have mixed results with metal, as I did). I have purchased some additional accessories for it (the rotary stage and risers) to attempt to engrave through the coating on some commercial steel vacuum tumblers. We’ll see how that goes! (I haven’t used it for long enough to speak to the durability of the moving parts or laser diode). ... show more

  • Surprisingly easier than I thought!
Size: 10000mW
I am prefacing this review with the note that this is my first laser machine, and I have no experience with any other type of machine besides a cricut. I'm not even great with computers... So total beginner! I was very intimidated before buying. Firstly, assembly of the machine was not nearly as complicated as I anticipated. The directions are a bit complicated or hard to understand in some parts, especially with the bad grammar, but I was able to complete it correctly the first time without even watching a video. Just really have to pay attention to the directions and what you're doing. Second, I decided to use the LaserGRBL program because its free and it was extremely easy to set up and connect to this machine. I installed the program, then the driver, and then just watched a quick 10 minute youtube video explaining the interface and how to engrave something. A few test prints later and I could complete the project I wanted to do! That said, there is a ton more to learn about this machine, the laser, and the program, so there will be a steep learning curve if you want it to do more than basic engraving on easy to burn material (I used cedar). Can't wait to try cutting! Side note, I originally wanted to engrave on brass cutouts, however I learned that this type of laser does not work well on materials like brass or copper. The brass I used did show up a bit but that was with quite a few passes, slow movement, and full power. ... show more

  • Failed after 3 uses
Size: 5500mW
The engraver was easy to put together and started out great. I engraved a few peices quite well but on my 4th engraving the graphic was extremely hard to see. I troubleshooted but the laser is still engraving extremely weak. I also saw other reviews that had the same issue with the laser not working after a few engravings. Very disappointed about this, now I have to find an alternative. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. Its an awesome starter laser. I plan to buy a bigger frame. I'm using the laser for my wood projects like engraving pictures and engraving words

Then didn't work at all to cut or engrave. Was pretty easy to put together instructions were very well written. Should come with Mat and height adjusters. Hopefully it will work after I restart my system. Could be a great tool if it does.
