I think this mattress works well on top of my kids bunk bed. I'd say it's pretty firm but has some give to it. My son is 7 and it works well for him. The only problem I have with this mattress is that it's too wide for a bed that comes with a rail. Our railing isn't removable and the mattress is a bit squished. I don't mind too much because it keeps the mattress firmly in place, but it's a pain when it's time to change the sheet.
