  • The best quality of sound for a battery-powered speaker of this size
Color: OG Green (Gen 2)
I purchased this Turtlebox specifically for my upcoming elopement wedding on a beach in Hawaii. I need something that is compact enough to take on a plane, easy to carry to the beach where our wedding ceremony will take place, is reasonably discreet, reliable, not too heavy, and has good enough sound quality. My intended purpose is to sing a song I will compose to my bride, backed by music that I will have recorded and loaded to my iPad, which will connect to the Turtlebox via Bluetooth, or from my iPod or iPad through a stereo Aux cable. I'll be keeping it super simple, and since it will just be my bride and me, aside from the officiator and photographer, she will be my only audience, so I won't need to amplify my voice with a microphone. But I do want her to hear the backing music, and for it to sound reasonably good. Now that I have tested the Turtlebox at home, I know that I made the right choice with this unit. As for the sound quality, I'm more than happy, and I can say that the Turtlebox passes that test with flying colors. Will it sound like a good home stereo? No. But that's not the point of this unit. Particularly at this size, physics dictates the kind of sound quality that can be achieved. This speaker sounds great for it's size and is reasonably balanced across the audio spectrum, having a nice full lower-midrange, and overall nice midrange. Although it's somewhat lacking in both the low frequency and high frequency ends of the spectrum, it's really as best as you can expect for a box of this size. Does it thump with dance music kick drum? Surprisingly yes! And it doesn't distort at all, which is quite impressive. Is it super loud? No, but it's plenty loud enough to enjoy music outdoors with the speaker within 10 or 20 feet away. And although it lacks treble and bass controls, it sounds much better than other units of similar size that do. It's also user-friendly and easy to use. There are three ways to input audio into this unit; via Bluetooth, 3.5mm stereo Aux input, and 3.5 stereo (non-balanced) microphone input. Since I do not yet have a proper cable to connect up a proper dynamic microphone, As far as I can tell, the volume on the microphone input is pre-set at a reasonably high volume level and cannot be changed. (Adusting the volume does not change the volume of what is being amplified from the mic input.) Since I do not yet have a dual (left & right) XLRF to 3.5mm plug cable to test out any of my dynamic microphones, I tried plugging in my Koss Portapro headphones into the mic input. (Yes, you can actually use headphones like that in reverse as microphones.) And that actually sounded very good. That said, a couple of my other headphones did not sound so good when used that way. The cool thing about the way the mic input works is that you can mix in the sound from either the Bluetooth or that Aux input to use the Turtlebox as a Karaoke machine. Although the microphone amplification level is fixed, the music can be adjusted in volume to create a volume-balanced mix between music and microphone. That said, I do wish it at least had an echo effect, and perhaps EQ, compression, reverb, recorded voice cancellation, and other effects, which would make it much more useful as a karaoke machine. But even lacking those features, it's still going to be louder and sound a lot better than karaoke machines that have those features are of similar size. I've read in other reviews that this is the "Yeti" of portable battery-powered speakers, that it's overpriced, and that there are better options that are less expensive. But after hearing the Turtlebox myself and knowing how it compares in size, I adamantly disagree. For example, there's also the ECOXGEAR Defender, but it's larger and stupidly designed with unnecessary handles on both ends (and not on the top where you'd actually want a handle to be), which compromises the portability, especially if you want to take it on a plane. In contrast, the Turtlebox is intelligently designed and made to be no larger than it needs to be. I just don't see anything out there that really compares for it's size, when the priority is being as compact and portable as possible while maintaining good sound quality and volume. There are very few battery-powered portable speakers of this size and form factor that have such good sound quality and volume. At this size and smaller, there are a number of options, including karaoke machines, but I venture to say that most (if not all) of the other ones are toys with poor sound quality. The next size up I was considering is the JBL Partybox Encore, but that speaker is perhaps a bit too large for what I need it for, and the actual speaker in it is actually smaller than the one in the Turtlebox. Previous to this, I tried an $85 karaoke machine with a 6.5" speaker with treble and bass EQ controls, echo effect for the microphones, and two wireless microphones. But even with the treble fully turned down, and the bass adjusted anywhere in it's range, the sound quality of that karaoke machine was lacking both in tone and in volume, sounding ratty and lacking lower midrange and bass. This became particularly apparent when playing my electric guitar through it, as there was some kind of horrible rattling resonance, which appeared no matter how loud I played my guitar through it, and regardless of whether the guitar tone was clean or distorted (and yes, I did properly process it through a guitar cab sim pedal). I didn't even bother trying out the mics with that unit, and sent it back for refund as soon as I could. Now that I have received the Turtlebox and have tested it out through bluetooth, Aux, and Mic inputs, I can say that I'm very pleased with this unit. Although it doesn't have the bells and whistles that the karaoke machine has, the Turtlebox has exactly what I need in terms of sound quality. If you need a battery-powered speaker of this size, with reasonably good sound quality, the Turtlebox is as good as it gets. You'd be hard-pressed to find anything better, regardless of price. Most everything else of this size is going to sound like a cheap toy in comparison. Oh, and by the way, if you do happen to want something a a bit louder that probably also has stronger bass, there's the Turtlebox Grande with an 8" speaker, although it's significantly larger and twice the weight. ... show more

  • It is everything they say it is
Color: OG Green (Gen 2)
This is not an inexpensive bluetooth speaker. It is heavy. It is not glossed over with slick design work and flashing lights. It is very loud (powerful / loud speakers require a larger amplifier and more power + larger speaker for better low frequency range = heavier box) compared with other bluetooth speakers, this one kicks their collective butts. The price is reflective of the value in that this thing is S-O-L-I-D, the battery lasts for a very long time even with the speaker cranked up to a high output level and it is water proof thus one should have no reservations using it in any location and weather condition. Cheap? No. Good value? Yes. I fully expect it to last well past other bluetooth speakers are in the junk pile. It connects easily to my phone. There are controls on the speaker that are redundant for "volume," "play," and "stop." There are also little connector jacks if one chooses to hard wire a music player that is not bluetooth (or a phone with a headphone jack but for some reason you do not want to use bluetooth for the signal link.) The style has a utilitarian quality to it which I really appreciate. No fake 'chrome' plastic material or flashing lights or weird little useless LCD screens to make the device fancy in some silly sort of way. This is a well built, loud, water proof bluetooth speaker first and the other small nod to style and fashion for sure come second. The only thing I think this box is missing is a little slot for the user to park their cell phone or MP3 player. That would have been a great extra... but maybe I will simply need to add something on my own. : ) Overall, if you want a bluetooth speaker that will not break the first time it falls off a table, has a generous battery life, delivers excellent audio output level (think hanging by the swimming pool in the summer time) this is the one for you. PS---as for high fidelity speakers, this is pretty good but no audiophile is going to get excited about it. I make my living as an audio person---I would place this sound quality as above crappy low-end speakers, but for sure below my Genelec studio monitors and old JBL hi-fi speakers. This is still an enjoyable speaker to listen to though. ... show more

  • Loud
Color: Thunderhead Gray/Black
Very loud and seems very durable. So far so good. Loud enough to hear over a aftermarket pipe on atv which was a must for me. Quick shipping. Connected to my phone right away. Seems to be a great product. A little spendy but seems well built. Definitely would recommend
