  • Sweet Book Indeed!
This is a superb freshwater aquarium book to have; every freshwater aquarium keeper owes it to himself or herself to get this one. It's packed with a lot of pertinent information on water temperature ranges, water types, care, habits, compatibility, etc. There are a lot of superb photographs that are a joy to explore. Walt Whitman once stated that he liked the feel of a good compact book that one could really get close to; well this is the one for freshwater aquarium buffs. Plenty of good reading with excellent photos! The plastic book cover is a nice touch to this fine paperback! ... show more

  • Good General Fish Guide
I'm not an expert on fish. I bought this to have a better understanding of the two types of fish i have in my tank, but also what other fish will be well suited for them as well. Almost all Fish guides are broken down in the categories that are provided: Name, Characteristics (sexing), Tank/Water, Car, Habits, and Compatibility. I bought this book along with the "What Fish? A buyer's guide to tropical fish". The Good: I like the fact that there is a picture for each fish. It gave me an idea what they looked like and I was able to know instantly if I would actually considering putting the fish in my tank. I also like that this book has certain comments about the fish, that other general guides do not have. Most books, pet stores, and even online forum will tell you it's okay to keep several guppies together. This books says that it should be only kept with catfish and bottom dwellers. I learned this the hard way. I wish I bought this book before that happened! The Bad: The only part I struggled with was the layout. It is smaller than normal text, they should have spaced out the sections a little more. I'm a little particular of layouts. This is the only reason I am giving it a 4 star rating. Also, I knew what I was getting into because I saw this book in the store. Overall, this is a great reference book! ... show more

  • Very helpful for the new aquarist
As someone new to the hobby, this book helped me tremendously in selecting not only what fish I could and should put in my new fish tank, but helpful tips as to how I should care for them (Ph levels, water temps, compatible types, etc.). I reviewed this book and read "The Essential Freshwater Aquarium" guide; both books help ensure that my first try as an aquarist results in a healthy environment for my fish. I was so impressed by the A to Z Guide that I bought one for a friend who has kept fish for over a year but was mixing fish indiscriminately without regard to the size of her tank or the type of fish already in the tank. We both now have a high enthusiasm for our aquariums and consult the guide before any new fish purchase. Highly recommended for new and experienced aquarists. ... show more

  • Recommend this book for anyone trying to learn their freshwater fish!
Came quickly and as described. I absolutely love this book. Got it as a Christmas gift for a coworker who was struggling a bit with his fish. He carries it around and identifies all the fish at our store and tells fast facts about them. Recommend this book for anyone trying to learn up on freshwater fish. Will probably order a second one for myself for reference. Love it! ... show more

  • Great fish book for a beginner--
I bought this for my daughter that has shown an interest in tropical fish. Thinking it was a book with lots of pictures , something that would add to the interest. Instead I got a book with plenty of nice photos but also very good descriptions f that fish and the habitat that it thrives . I super book!! ... show more

  • Very helpful. Photos are superb.
Book is small (length & width). But, it is has about 250 pages of useful information. For each fish that is discussed, there is a nice, close-up, color photo. Plus the scientific name, the common household name, characteristics (very brief), is given. Also, the author provides a few sentences covering: Care, Habits, and Compatibility for each fish. Plus, the "recommended tank size" is given, which often seems too large in my opinion. This is a very good reference book if you are trying to figure out what type of fish you have, or if you want to check the compatibility of specific fish. The print is small, but it is clear and sharp because of the high quality paper. For the price, this was a good purchase. ... show more
