  • I love it
I now have this book in English and in Spanish. This is a great book for identifying freshwater fish. The pictures are amazing. I really love this book. I am a newspaper reporter...when meetings I cover get boring this book provides hours of entertainment for me. I love both of them. The book in Spanish allows me to brush up on my Spanish. I am so happy that I have them. They are my favorite books of all time. Dr. Axelrod's knowledge of fish is tremendous. I highly recommend Dr. Axelrod's Mini-Atlas of Freshwater Aquarium Fishes to everyone who has at least one aquarium and loves fish. I was able to identify my Synodontis Petricola catfish because of this book. Pet store employees often don't have the knowledge they need to sell fish. Now that I have this book I can identify fish in a pet store before I buy them. I also learned how to make my live plants thrive. My 75 gallon aquarium is beautiful...this book will help me keep it that way. Sincerly, Kim Lawrence in Pittsburgh Pa. ... show more

  • very good book
This is a very nice book featuring many of the fish that you will find in home aquariums. Very nice photographs from front through back. Even includes more rare and less seen species. It gives basic information at the bottom of each photo that give you a good idea of its general diet, habitat, level of tank occupancy in the water column, reproduction type (live or egg laying), lighting and temperament. All species are covered under scientific name only under their photos but there is a common name cross reference index in the back that takes you to the appropriate page , so if your not familiar with them... you might have to look in the back, but it has a lot of new updates to the taxa . Its sections on breeding are somewhat general to genes or family but very descriptive and overall helpful. It also contains sections on maintenance and setup and even plants. ... show more

  • Wonderful book! Great Purchase!
I love this book. There is so much awesome information inside of it. There is a total of 992 pages with a variety of different fish breeds. There is 6-7 pictures with different fish on the pages usually 3 and 3 some 4 and 3 and these photos are all beautiful. There is a scientific name under each photo and a symbol for the type of care that specific fish needs. I dont pratically care for the symbols but the book is still wonderful. The only other thing that isn't that great about this book is some of this fish that are in the same family of fish have the same scientific names even though they are obviously two different fish from the same family. I suggest any serious aquarist get this book! ... show more

  • A usefull tool in the aquarist library
The bulk book is just hundreds of photographs of fish fallowed by basic information about the fish therein. It is organized by fish family as many things are in the aquarium hobby. The book has three Indexes, fish alphabetized by scientific name, fish alphabetized by common name, and an index for the text portion of the book, and I think that is brilliant. The photos are a tiny bit grainy however the photos are taken in such a way that the fish in the picture are very detailed, and you could easily use this book to identify an unknown fish. There is information about many common plants, the book also has short basic sections about health, breeding, maintenance, equipment, the stuff that is in most fish books, etc. My one major complaint is I wish there was more information about each individual fish such as sexual dimorphism, water chemistry, and breeding, also the common names are not with the photos only the scientific names are so they must be cross-referenced in the index. I think many people have given this book a bad review simply because it comes so highly recommended that people expect it to be allot more than it is. its no holy grail of the fish books, far from it, but I think for what it is it does good. ... show more

  • Large hardcover book w/great photos!
I gave this to my friend who has been an aquarist for many years. He didn't need a strictly informative book so he wasn't concerned on whether the information is a little "old". He just started flipping through the pages and calling out all the Latin names (that he already knew) and eagerly told me endless stories about all the species. He was so enthused that he was still talking after I left the room ;-) He said he might frame some of the photos, but doesn't want to tear the pages out and ruin the book. Ill let him figure that one out, but this was a good gift for him at a great price! ... show more

  • Hey fish nerds!
This is a great book for the hobbyist. Tons of pictures and some info on diseases and treatments. It is outdated of course, but it is vastly interesting. The fish are identified by taxonomic description through several indices in the back. Also the book is very heavy. I was glad to add this to my home library because I like books and I like aquariums and yeah I enjoy reading science(y) stuff. ... show more

  • Clearly a printers error, second rate product
Call me picky but, when a description of a book says the condition is "Very Good", I expect the book to be truly in very good condition. This is obviously something that was discounted out originally because of an error when it was produced. The cover is upside down. If you open the book with the front cover facing you, all the pages are upside down and the book is backwards. Granted this does not affect the content of the information but is a rather disappointing and obviously misleading description of the book. I won't be buying from this seller again. ... show more
