  • Very capable smartphone for a good price
Coming from an older phone to a new one is always a learning experience, but the default screen navigation used on the Moto g Stylus 5G is not that hard to master. Fewer screen buttons than my last LG phone but the swiping to go back, versus an arrow button, is fairly straightforward. However, I find that the traditional three buttons at the bottom of the screen are just easier to use. The good news is that you can easily turn them on: Settings>Accessibility>System Navigation>3-Button Navigation. The "gesture" feature allows the phone to be turned on with a shake and a swipe up, when the screen activates, to get to the lock screen. Or just push the button on the side. One really handy gesture feature is that the camera can be instantly turned on, even on a locked phone, with a double twist of the wrist and it is really easy. I do think smartphones are getting crazy big nowadays and this one, being slick, is hard to hold securely. Once I got a good holster case for it, that wasn't a problem anymore. Getting my phone number switched from the old phone was a bit of a hassle because the Tracfone website is famously flakey, but I managed to do the switch by using the website chat feature. Took a few minutes, once I reached an agent, and the new phone was up and running. As with most Tracfones, this one is CDMA, which means that it uses the Verizon network. Yes, really. You need a Verizon signal for it to work. One reviewer here complained that one can't set different ringtones for contacts. Not true! Page 61 of the pdf user manual explains how to do it: open up your contact then touch the three dots in the upper right corner for "more options," one of which is "Set Ringtone." You can choose different ringtones for different contacts. I prefer to set a generic ringtone using the usual settings menu and then have all my contacts have special ringtones that I made myself. That way I can tell by the ring if it is a known or an unknown caller. If unknown, I don't answer — if they leave a voicemail I can get back to them. Known caller ring and I answer. Not that I get many real calls, like most folks, my contacts and I prefer text messages. I am quite pleased with the Moto g Stylus 5G! Edit: This question comes up a lot: The phone shipped with Android 11 and my phone just got an update to Android 12 on 5 August 2022. So, yes, it will get updated to Android 12! If you have access to fast internet, this phone will do WiFi calling automatically. I find that WiFi calling is so good, so seamless, that the only way I know that the call was made over the internet, versus the cell network, is because of the little WiFi symbol on my call log! Another Edit: After another Android 12 system update, my phone lost mobile data connection (WiFi was fine). After a chat with Tracfone service, it turned out that it was an obscure setting under "APNs" that had been turned off by the update: Settings>Network and Internet>Mobile Network, make sure Mobile Data is on (of course) then at the bottom:; "Access Point Names">"Tracfone Internet VZWINTERNET" should be selected (on). [In case this happens to someone else!] Edit 3: Purchased another one of these phones for my partner in January 2024 and it came with Android 12 already installed. Transfer of all her contacts, text messages, and apps was really easy using WiFi between the old and new phone as part of the setup of the new one. Transfer of her Simple Mobile phone number and activation via the Tracfone website was easy. Several hours later, the old phone stopped working and the new Moto g Sylus 5G started working. As before, each time a software update happens the data connection is lost until the Access Point Names, "Tracfone Internet VZWINTERNET", is turned back on, as described above. ... show more

  • I can't believe the quality and features this phone has for the price I paid. Motorola is back!!!!!
I already use Tracfone because everything is so easy (using the my account app). This being locked isn't a problem for me because my plan gives me enough minutes and data for the way I use the phone. This phone is excellent and also works with wifi calling that works great in my house. Full of features, face recognition, finger print which has a built in reader instead of placing your finger on the phone screen. The finger print reader works flawlessly. Has the latest 5g network (via verizon) which is good for me because other services don't work great in my area. Has a stylus for doing stuff but haven't even got there yet. It doesn't have NFC (as far as I believe) but that's not a bother for me. Also has the lastest android version 11 something. Yes I got this at a crazy low price because I took advantage of Prime day. I would state more but I have only had it 5 days now and spend spending time make sure I have it setup like my Samsung A50 and iPhone. There is just so much more I haven't even touched so I can say more other than I am super happy with this so far and glad I bought it. Hope this review was helpful and didn't want to write something so long that people won't read it. Why some other are having connection issues I don't understand why. I activate mine through the My Account android app and it was a piece of cake with no issues what so ever. It work properly right at the very beginning using the sim card that was already in it. ... show more

  • Mostly good, with some bad
I bought this phone as a replacement for a Samsung A20. I usually get a new phone every 3-4 years so it was about time for me. This phone has more onboard storage space which is great because apps continue to take up more and more space so I was filling up the mere 32GB the A20 has. Plus it simply has better performance than the A20. The specs as a whole are a major upgrade. It is a noticeably larger phone as well which is fine for me but some people may prefer a smaller screen. I haven't had the phone that long but battery life appears to be as good as or better than the A20 as well. The first thing I turned off is gesture navigation. I simply don’t like it. Some people might prefer it but I tried it for a bit and hated it. Thankfully Google still allows us to turn that off and go back to the old school Android buttons at the bottom of the screen. Another thing I dislike is that you have to use Google’s built-in “Files by Google” app to access your files or download a 3rd party app from the Play Store (which means you will either have to pay for an app or get in-app ads). You can no longer pin specific folders to the screen either, you can only pin the app itself which means more clicks to get to the folder you want. The built-in Samsung file explorer on my A20 allowed you to do that. I transfer music files to my phone a lot so I liked having those folders pinned for easy access. Not being able to do that is a bit of a step back in terms of convenience to me. There is a native app in the app list and you can access it through the Storage settings but there is no other way I can find to use it. This phone also has no “double tap to turn screen off/on” options. If they are there I can’t find them and it doesn’t work that way by default. There is also an annoying feature inside the Moto app called “Peek Display” which caused my phone’s screen to turn on every two minutes or so. If you are having that issue, try disabling that feature to see if it fixed the problem. I will say that I like the “Fast Flashlight” gesture but I turned the rest of them off. The phone will also try to upgrade Android 12 which some people will hate due to UI issues. I sympathize with that but the pill boxes in the quick access menu and then large clock on the lock screen don’t bother me much. I’d still like an option to revert back to Android 11 style though. Also many of the apps ask me to rate them on the Play Store. I guess this is because they are Google apps? I really don’t know but I don’t care to rate them and it’s annoying. Overall I do think it’s a good phone but it does have some issues. The good definitely outweighs the bad and ultimately it’s just another Android phone with some weird quirks and design decisions like they all have. ... show more
