Description

You've never seen football formations and tactic explored like they are in Total Football ever before. A must-have for football experts! A goalkeeper, two defenders and eight attackers – it’s no surprise that in the 1950s under this popular formation scores like 9-3 were common. So what changed? Total Football tells the evolution of football tactics: from the birth of Total Football in the Netherlands to the dominance of tiki taka in Spain and Brazil, each chapter explores an iconic tactic. Innovative graphics alongside expert text guide you through the manager decisions that developed new formations, the pure talent of players that defined each playing style and the matches that propelled the winning tactic to legendary status. Sanjeev Shetty explores how each tactic works, how they came to dominate and how opponents worked to find a way to beat them. From Pele to Messi, Cruyff to Mourinho, Total Football explores the tactics that made the legends, giving you a new understanding of how the beautiful game is played. Read more

  • Clear Presentation Of Soccer Tactics
My problem with most soccer books I’ve read is I can’t follow them. I get caught up in the names and trying to follow the description. I think Total Football nails it with all the charts used. My other problem with Soccer books is that they’re either too simple, covering only the basic rules, or else too technical, assuming I know more than I do. I found Total Footballl a nice middle ground, explaining things like a false nine. It has a good amount of history and I like the focus on individual matches. It covers a good amount of historical matches as well as contemporary. You’ll also find yourself learning a lot about players and teams in addition to tactics. Highly recommend, especially to people who may struggle with prose only descriptions of Soccer tactics. ... show more

  • The perfect book to dig deeper into soccer tactics!
I have to say, I am TOTALLY nerding out on this book...as a soccer coach, referee and fan, this book is AWESOME. I love the presentation of the soccer tactic through actual matches, as well as the diagrams to describe what's going on. This book is NOT for the faint of heart and if you're new to soccer, you'll probably get overwhelmed quickly...but if you have a base knowledge of soccer and soccer tactics and want to dig deeper, this is the PERFECT book. ... show more

  • Tactics overview for kids
Let's be real: this is a kid's book. It's written very simplistically and largely superficially. Anyone who really knows anything about football and its history is not going to learn anything new here. Additionally, it's designed as though created in an elementary school arts and crafts class with pages changing colo(u)r for no reason other than to look pretty. The graphics, purporting to show tactical development, are also very simplistic and offer little by way of penetrating insight - and they constantly interrupt the flow of the text, so you either have to stop to look at the graphic, or ignore it to follow the text and then turn back to the graphic. Annoying! There are glaring errors, too, which somebody involved with this book should have caught, including reference to Italy as 'defending champions' in the 1970 World Cup final. Prior to 1970, the last time Italy were defending World Cup champions was after the 1938 final! Also, we are told that Herrara's catennaccio Internazionale team of the '60s scored and conceded goals in equal measure. What?! The whole point of catennaccio was that it was successful in NOT conceding goals! Still further, we are told that Liverpool won the European Cup in 1977 for the second time. Oh dear, oh dear! Liverpool won it in 1977 for the FIRST time - NOT the second. Glaring errors such as this really undermine a soccer book's credibility. ... show more
