  • I've installed 19 of these so far....
Color: Warm White (3000K)
Out of 20... The last one is a pain to get the power to, but I'll probably do it shortly. I love these things. I've done 11 in my two garages of my rental houses. Two on a covered patio, two in a laundry room, three in a utility room, one more in another utility room because I couldn't see by the hot water heater and boiler. The garage ones have been sealed ceilings. I rotozip the holes and snake wire to them, mount the box through the hole using a stubby hand screwdriver. Then you plug in the light, make sure it works and snap the spring clamps into place. Done! For unfinished ceilings like utility and laundry rooms, I used scrap particle board or plywood and rotozipped a hole in a 17.5" x 12" piece, ran wire and mounted the box, snapped the light into the board and used drywall screws to mount it to the ceiling, then plugged the light in. Done! I've done all these in the last year and they're all working. I use the 20th one for a portable light on a cord at the moment, its kind of handy. I can't speak to the longevity yet. I hope I get more than a decade out of them, but we'll see. A minor drawback is that the clips are fine for 0.5", a bit tight at 0.625" drywall, and I'm not sure they'll work that well at 0.75". We may have done a piece of particle board that was 0.75, but we were using scrap, so I don't remember. A characteristic of the design is that these flood an area with light. If you're looking to create a scalloped shadow look along a wall like with a recessed can, this is not the light for you. In short, I give these two thumbs up. They've allowed me to really light garages where I've put up with two porcelain plates for years. It changes the whole nature of the garage. They also allowed me to really light rooms that were poorly lit using porcelain plates in about 2 hours per room. They also look great, are cheap, and use minimal electricity. I've seen a house where they were used in the kitchen and hallways and they looked fine, I just don't have a need to do that at the moment in any of mine. ... show more

  • Color temperature of 2700k incorrect, 100w equivalency rating way over rated.
Color: Soft White (2700K)
Very disappointed in these lights. My first Torchstar purchase was the retrofit recessed kit 6", 2700k, 90w equivalent and I absolutely loved those. Color was perfect, light output was great, dimming worked great, I was very happy with them so when I saw these come along and the prices started dropping I purchased an 8 pack back in February for a remodel project. They went on sale again earlier this month so I bought another 8 pack. I wish I would've opened the first pack and tried them within the return period because these are terrible compared to the recessed retrofit lights. First of all these are marketed as 100 watt equivalent lights, 10 watts higher equivalent than the retrofits, yet they produce 400 lumens less. It had been long enough since installing the retrofits that I didn't recall the lumen rating, only that they were 90w equivalent so expected a little more brightness out of lights with a 10w higher rating. Based on the 850 lumen output of these lights they should only be rated at 60w equivalent to incandescent for intensity. If you go to the Energy Star website and look at Torchstar's bulb ratings you'll find that all of their 100w equivalent bulbs produce well over 1000 lumens. If you look at light fixtures, where these are located, you'll find that Energy Star doesn't list equivalency ratings on fixtures. Basically, Torchstar is being very dishonest on the equivalency as it is nowhere near 100w equivalent to an incandescent. Though upon looking at others out there, they definitely are not the only ones doing this by any means. It is a very dishonest rating to make them look better than they are. The final nail in the coffin: Though I was very disappointed in the intensity output I did had enough lights to simply add more than planned to increase total intensity, that was until I saw the color output. I purchased 2700k lights as I much prefer the very warm, incandescent colored lighting for home use. They give rooms a nice warm glow compared to even 3000k, above that even worse still for home use unless you like the cold, dull, depressing higher color temps (my opinion of course, no offense intended, I just can't stand higher color temps for home use). Anyway, the original retrofits were perfect as I said but these are definitely much closer to 3000k. They clearly look like some 3000k bulbs and a work light that I have and very much make my freshly painted walls look dull and depressing compared to the 2700k lights. I was willing to sacrifice intensity but the color temp was the last straw. I'm sending back the second set as I'm fortunately within the return window but the first set I'll have to see if I can warranty and get my money back as they're not as described. If the intensity was greater, or at least more honest, and the color was a proper match I would have no issues giving these a full five stars. I love the very thin design, not requiring cans, and they run significantly cooler than the retrofits though that itself is unsurprising considering how much less the intensity is. Surprisingly though their life estimation is 15,000 hours less than the retrofits. Unfortunately that estimation is likely on the diodes themselves rather than the entire package, the circuitry is far more likely to fail before the diodes reach their end, especially on the retrofits with the circuitry running at much higher temperatures. These are quite a bit less efficient lumen/watt than the retrofits which could play into the life estimation. Hopefully this review helps. I know two stars seems low, more like the rating someone would give when complaining over something stupid or something that is clearly their own fault, but these issues I addressed are clearly a complete failure of these lights doing what they were supposed to do and shows off a dishonesty in marketing. ... show more

  • Good Value, Nice Color, Bright but Adjust Quite Nicely with a Dimmer
Color: Warm White (3000K)
I like these lights. There are some cons, but these were manageable. The junction box is a bit of a nuisance as the ears to mount the box to a beam are small and close to the knock outs for the service wiring. You'll need to buy small screws; take the box with you to the hardware store. I think I got 3/4 inch and that was plenty of length. Because the box is thin, you need to tighten down the cable clamps (3/8" purchased separately) with the screw heads facing the beam, before you mount the box. Then you can mount the box. The leads from the box to the light, and the light to the box, are a little short, but worked out just fine. Note that I cut holes in the ceiling tiles, and mounted the light directly into the tiles. The lights weigh 8.5 ounces, so there's no problem with the tiles sagging. I used the Dremel hole cutting attachments (678-01 Circle Cutter and Straight Edge Guide; $10--we already had the Dremel tool). This method was easy. But, as mentioned above, be sure that the box is mounted as close as possible to the light because the lead isn't very long. The lights are nice, 3,000K seems like a good color for a rec room (basement). And 850 lumens is a bright light. I have eight of them, four feet apart, across a room that's about 30 by 15. Almost too much light without the dimmer. I used a Lutron Maestro; MACL-153M-WH. Plenty of range, no flicker. As these are not recessed, the lights shine in your eyes a little as you walk into the room. But the specific application is surface mount, so that's the way it goes. I didn't have room for recessed cans. ... show more
