  • Clearly little people designed this coop!
Size: 19.6' L x 9.8' W x 6.5' H
First and foremost, the overall result is a useable and a somewhat nice coop. But...there's always a 'but', be absolutely sure to put any other interior houses or large items over 23" wide inside before erecting this coop over them. The door is 24" wide. Add the chicken wire which will not be entirely flush, and it will be a real challenge to move anything that's 2' wide inside. Also, consider the fact that the tallest point inside is directly down the middle. The sides are only 3' tall. So for those men out there like my husband who hates 'Doll houses' as he calls them, this would not be a good option. I'm 5'5" tall, and the door barely permits me to walk through, so when the husband whacked his head I knew he was not going to volunteer to feed or water my chickens for me. Some other somewhat annoying features were the crooked long bars down the center top, two poorly shaped "L" joints for attaching the roof to the sides, and the less than level bottom 'feet' where several ended up not even touching soil. Yes, they include securing anchors, but in our sandy loam such lightweight aids are useless. We ended up hammering in steel fencing posts and wiring the 3 non-contact feet to the posts to keep them on the ground. Our biggest gripe was about the poor quality zip ties included. It seemed that half of them were non-functional with the center tab breaking off. It's no wonder they included so many. And in order to salvage enough to finish the project, we used 'J' clamps (like what you use for hardware cloth when making cages) to connect large sections of the chicken wire including the roof wiring overhead. It was a great concept and made the entire unit look so much nicer. Though flimsy, we attached one side of the unit to an adjoining steel fence. Once it was completely put together, hubby and I were able to lift the entire unit and move it. The chicken wire is not 100% galvanized, nor heavy. It was a very lightweight, coated version, though we loved it for that reason as application was truly a breeze. Be prepared to take two days to put this together. We are ranchers and homesteaders with lots of livestock, so we do a lot of hands on building projects, yet this unit required a lot of time as we did not want to provide any gaps for predators or have it look too unsightly. The gate construction is a booger and not strong enough to remain straight due to the simple box design, but it's still useable and decent. We are going to add a shade cloth cover over the top as the small portion that is tarped simply isn't adequate for our toasty AZ summers. There is no question that the lightweight chicken wire will absolutely cave-in or break if anything over 50 pounds attempted to climb on the top surface, like a mountain lion or bobcat, which we have in ample supply here. So only time will tell if our newest 12 week old chickens will remain safe inside or not. The ranch dog will definitely let us know if a badger or skunks attempt to get inside, and that, too, will let us know just how reliable the wiring is (or is not). We have another huge 30' by 40' chicken coop constructed from chain link (dog kennel kits) and so far in 5 years we have only had one skunk incidence where we lost about 7 chickens. But chain link provides very wide openings, which is why we opted for the chicken wire this time around with our newest chickens. This would be a great backyard city chicken enclosure, but for out here in the wilderness, only time will tell. ... show more
