  • Decent starter set
Got this for my son who is going into middle school band. Easy to assemble and came with a variety of sticks. Would give it 5 stars if it had notes labeled with on them.

  • Well, Better Than Nothing
GOOD: 1. Delivered one day earlier than described. 2. Arrived undamaged, but only in a cardboard box. 3. The xylophone is clean and adequately finished. 4. The stand is functional and lightweight- be gentle with it. 5. It's a practice xylophone; it's suitable for Music classroom instruction ( elementary school). BAD: 1. The lowest A is tuned to around 450 Hz (extremely sharp, between A and A#). 2. In my music classroom-with noticeable temperature fluctuation- this xylophone seems to have intonation deviations throughout the day. I notice the octaves going flat. 3. The "hard wood" seems soft (or maybe the mallets are not rated for this xylophone- hard rubber). I managed to leave tiny dings in the wood, so I switched to felt and soft wood mallets, which didn't damage the wood. The damage is minor, but I know it's been done. 4. Of course, it has extremely short sustain (no resonators). 5. I will be utilizing this xylophone for an elementary school performance. I'll use the mallets that were supplied with it. Yes, the mallets are cheap, but tight budgets tend to require cheap equipment. 6. Cheap? I don't think this xylophone is cheap in price. The price seems a bit high for what I bought with my own money. But, hey! I have a xylophone for more of my students to learn on; it's better than nothing. RECOMMENDATIONS: 1.Yes. If you teach on a low budget and don't mind the intonation problems and worries, buy it. 2. No. If you perform in public for money or reputation, [run] away as fast as you can from this xylophone. I don't know how soon your band/ensemble members would fire you for playing out of tune. 3. Yes, If you love music and must play along with other Music lovers, no matter what the conditions (except the outdoor weather conditions). 4. Absolutely, No. If you have perfect pitch, spend the big money for a professional xylophone. This xylophone will drive you insane (I'm already immune or it's too late). FINAL THOUGHTS: 1. I had considered returning this xylophone as I was checking its tuning. I was shocked to hear the sharp intonation. My tuner gave me a real dirty look. 2. I decided to give it another chance when I read that Beethoven had a tuning fork tuned a little over A=455 Hz. Who knows maybe the standard tuning of A=440 will be abandoned in my lifetime and switch to A=450....right? ... show more
