  • Updated Review
Color: white
Updated Review: Shortly after I wrote my original review, I was contacted by TMY with an offer of a replacement projector to make things right. Through the whole process, their customer service was top notch. Now, as far as the Projector goes, they sent me a slightly newer model than this one, so take this review with a grain of salt, as I can't be certain on what a new unit for this model will be like. Anyway, on to the review: In short, this projector is pretty good for the price, you just need to know what you want in a projector. We've had an old Vankyo projector for the past 4 years, with similar specs to this one. It has 15 degree keystone tilt, 75%-100% zoom, 230 ANSI lumens, and several inputs. Pretty simple projector that is just aging a bit and has fit our needs fairly well. The lens has gotten some scratches on it from our 4 kids, and some burn in, so we figured we would get a new one, with maybe 1-2 new feature. Now, it looks like Vankyo has been kicked off Amazon for some shady practices (they offered me a free projector stand in exchange for a review at the time), so I had to look at other options. Enter the TMY. I looked around at new projectors in the same price point with one additional feature I wanted, bluetooth audio. The Vankyo's built in speakers were fine, but when we did outdoor movies, having to hook up cords was kind of a pain, and I wanted something that would get loud enough to be heard over the occasional airplane that flew overhead. The TMY seemed to check all the boxes. It had a slightly brighter bulb with about 100 more ANSI lumens, and had bluetooth for audio. All the other specs seemed similar, so I pulled the trigger on a Cyber Monday sale. The unit I received was clearly a returned item, with gouges on the casing that looked like someone tried to pry it open at one point (maybe an attempt to repair it?). The keystone on it was awful, the focus wouldn't focus very clearly, and, I realized, it didn't have any zoom support. So I returned it and wrote an honest review of the experience and projector, with the caveat that a new unit might be better overall than the returned one I was sent. The one problem I had with it that I knew would be an issue regardless if all the other issues were fixed was the key feature that it lacked a zoom function. So when TMY contacted me offering a replacement with their newer model, I went to the page and looked it up to make sure the newer model supported zoom. A free replacement projector is nice, but if it doesn't work for my needs, it doesn't work for my needs. Luckily, the newer model said it supported zoom, so I went ahead and got the replacement. The new projector is much nicer than the old. The picture focuses much easier, the keystone adjusts much easier, and the audio with bluetooth on my speaker is amazing. There's a little lag on YouTube, but with everything else the audio has been perfectly in sync. Overall, it worked pretty well. I had it running side by side with my old Vankyo and the picture was quite a bit brighter and better overall. The only problem I was having was, I couldn't find the zoom option anywhere in the menu. I contacted customer service again and asked them about the zoom function as noted on the product page. They were quick to respond, but unfortunately let me know it didn't actually support zoom, but the zoom function was only for media from the usb/sd card reader it supported, not for making the picture smaller. So, if you've read the far, this is the main problem with this projector, and the reason I can't give it more stars, in spite of TMY's great customer service. But, if your usage is different than mine, it might be a fine projector for you. When you can't zoom in and out with a projector to make the screen smaller, you have to do it by physically moving the projector forward and backward. The problem with this is, if you need to say, mount it on a shelf and the shelf is too far back. There's no way to shrink the image to fit the screen it's projecting on. And, without having a digital 4D keystone like some more expensive projectors, this also means it for the most part needs to be right in the center of where you're going to project it on. So, in our case, it doesn't fit in our kids' playroom where we wanted to put it on a shelf where they a: can't reach it, and b: it stays out of the middle of the floor. We also tried it in our living room, but it has to be so close to the wall we project onto and in the middle of the room that it is a little in the way and we had to makeshift a stand for it to get it high enough for it to project at the right height. We finally found a spot where it will work in our bedroom, where we set it up on a table in the middle of the floor, about 6 feet from the wall in order to keep the screen size small enough to fit the spot we have available for it. But this requires us to move the table out to that spot every time we want to use it, and move it back when we are done. Additionally, the fan is quite a bit louder than our Vankyo was, which isn't bad for watching movies with the family, especially outdoors when we have the audio turned way up, but with the place it works the best currently, in our bedroom, where we don't have the audio as loud, the fan can be a bit distracting. So, to sum up, the TMY is a solid projector for the price, depending on what you need it for. If you don't mind moving it back and forth to get the right screen size, or plan on using it exclusively outdoors at night, it will probably work just fine for you. If you need to mount it somewhere, you probably want to make sure the area you are projecting on is the right distance away for the size before you purchase this, or look for something with a zoom. It will make your life much easier. For us, after this experience we decided we would go ahead and spend a little more and get all the features we knew we wanted, and have ordered yet another projector that has 4D keystone, 50%-100% zoom options, bluetooth audio, and about 900 ANSI lumens, so we can watch movies outside before the sun sets as well. It was a little over double the price of this one though, so it really just depends on what you want to spend for the features you want. We'll be keeping this one for our bedroom for now, because it does have a lot going for it, and I definitely want to find a use for it where I can. Original Review: I bought this projector supposedly on a Cyber Monday sale, though after Cyber Monday it was actually $1 cheaper than what I paid for it. Not a big deal, but felt pretty shady overall. But that's just the tip of the iceberg of problems. Once it arrived and I opened it up, I noticed there was no plastic wrapping the projector, just a thin piece of foam on only 1 side. The cords were not wrapped either, and the twist tie was off one of them and just floating in the box. The projector was clearly a returned item. The projector itself had scratches all over the housing and the lens had smudges on it. Well, I figured I would try it out anyway and plugged it in and got it set up with my Roku. The picture quality was worse than my old projector that is very smudged and has some permanent damage to the lens (which is why I was buying a new one). The keystone didn't have a very wide range for adjustment, and made a grinding noise when I adjusted it. The focus was also not great and never really got into focus. And finally, the fan was louder than my last projector, and much higher pitched, harder to ignore. The sound itself wasn't awful, though it didn't matter much to me because I got this to use with a bluetooth speaker, but, with the fan's loud noise, it wasn't great. The menu was also pretty difficult to use, something I'd taken for granted with my last projector as well. Some of these issues are likely due to it being a returned item, and may not be indicative of an overall bad product, however, there are a few things that, even if the projector was brand new and operating properly, I would still not keep it for. No Zoom option. I didn't realize how much I used this, but in some spaces, I really need the option to shrink down the screen size. Short Keystone range. This is doubly affected by the lack of zoom. The projector really has to be placed in the exact right spot to get anywhere near a normal picture. Difficult Menu. There are several extra steps just to switch between inputs easily through the menu. It's just poor design and frustrating to use. If you don't need the zoom function, and are mounting this somewhere where the keystone isn't important, and happen to be lucky enough to get a new one that works otherwise, this might not be a bad projector for you. But I can't be certain, because the picture also wasn't ever that clear and the fan was pretty loud, both potentially defects that aren't on all models, but maybe not, maybe it's just not a good picture. ... show more

  • UPDATED: replacement works great
Color: white
Update: The customer service team reached out after my previous review offering to replace my projector with their newest version. It was delivered in two days and works great so far! They are very accommodating and speedy, which I appreciate. *** The first time I bought this projector, I had to ask for a replacement because it stopped working after a day. After using the replacement for less than a year (around 2 times a month), it suddenly won’t turn on anymore. Don’t waste your money on this. ... show more

  • So dull you can hardly see the picture even in a decently dark room.
Color: white
Update: The seller reach out and sent me an upgraded model that works so much better! The 4 stars is for customer service alone. I got this in November last year. I’ve used this for work in an elementary school gym with only minimal natural lighting (the lights in the gym are turned off and there are a few small windows that let in light) and you can hardly see the screen! I’ve tried changing the settings and nothing gets better. I’ve used another project with much better screen quality. ... show more

  • Updated: Started out great but now no sound
Color: white
Update: A representative reached out to me in regards to my previous review. She was extremely kind and understanding of the prior issue. I was sent a newer model of the projector and the difference is immediate. The picture color is brighter and more vivid. The sound is better and the obnoxious fan noise is greatly reduced compared to the older model. I can now enjoy viewing content without the extra fan distraction. I appreciate the timeliness of the representative reaching out to me and the speed of acquiring the new projector. Old Review: I bought this a few months ago and started out working fine. The projector fan is a bit loud and noisy but you get used to it. The no sound problem started two months ago where I turned on the projector as usual and the sound doesn't work. No sound from the home screen. No sound when I go to another app (ex: Hulu, Netflix, Youtube). Nothing! Then the sound would come back either a few hours later when I tried again or the next day. I would unplug everything from the projector sometimes and then plug everything back up and the sound would still not return. I realized there's nothing I can do and just essentially "wait" until the sound comes back which is sporadic. For example, I was watching a show yesterday and now this morning the sound came on for a few seconds and then stopped working. So, now I'm unable to thoroughly enjoy the projector as I previously had. This is honestly very embarrassing as I was going to use this projector for an arts event and brought it as a backup because I wasn't confident the sound would work in front of the live audience. I choose another projector just to be on the safe side. I don't know if this projector is faulty or if this is a gradual problem with this make and model but I'm disappointed in this purchase now because I just wanted to enjoy my viewing content without all this hassle and wondering if my sound will work today or not. I would appreciate a replacement for a newer model because I did originally enjoy the projector and its capabilities. ... show more
