  • This bag is the shiz
This bag ticks all the boxes for me. It looks good, it has zippered pouches, pouches easy to get at, it can be closed with a flap or zippered closed, and the flap has velcro that is coverable so you can open it quietly. You all know how it is with camera bags. You'll get the greatest thing ever, but it's the wrong size. You'll find something the right size but it is missing a feature you want. Somehow you always want another bag. I've gotten a few in the last five years or so because of this and this one is higher quality than all of them. I had a good bag from another company for years that was about this size. After 15 years the zippers failed and, frankly, it looked like a shiny nylon camera bag so I wanted to replace it. Five years back I bought a Domke bag, which is an absolute classic, and I love the look over shiny modern nylon. It's the classic 70s news reporter bag of there ever was one. But it is not protective and has no padding. The top doesn't zip closed so things can fall out -- I lost my favorite pen when my pen case fell out while on a plane -- and a velcro closed top for quick in and out is really the most convenient of modern conveniences. I got an Amazon branded bag for cheap that closed more securely and held a laptop and it was fine for the price. But it isn't particularly good, just good for the price. I like it for travel with its computer case, and I like that its fabric rather than shiny, but it only OK overall. And it's too big for walking around locally, when I'm not carrying a computer with me and don't want to bring two spare lenses and a flashgun. I also have a couple of holsters, just big enough for the camera with the lens on it, which are wonderfully compact, but obviously limited. Enter this badboy. It's big enough for my Z7 or 7100 wearing a lens, another lens, and acessories like a flash gun, or maybe a small prime. That's it for the camera compartment, but that's enough. There's also a hole for a tablet or whatever in the padded section, and this whole camera/tablet section can be zipped close for secure storage. The back has a zipper closed pocket, good for storing a cellphone or something valuable when you're doing street photography where there might be pickpockets, a situation I've encountered before. The front has both zipper closed pockets and open pockets that are easily accessible. The open pocket is pretty secure as the top flap closes over it and can be velcroed down. As mentioned above, the velcro holds the top flap securely but you can leave the camera compartment unzipped and pull it up quickly to grab the contents, or leave it zipped when you want it to be much more secure. The velcro has covers that you can put over it so you can leave it closed, but silently open it, which is great at a wedding or concert when you might want to reach into the bag and not make an obnoxious velcro ripping noise and watch the whole crowd turn around and stare at you just as the bride is about to recite her vows. Construction is high quality. Everything looks sturdy and really well made. Even the shoulder strap is nice, and the padded part that goes over the shoulder ACTUALLY WORKS. Like, it's padded, comfortable, and stays on your shoulder where most other bags I've had might as well just be the strap, the shoulder pad is so useless. And it looks good. To my personal aesthetic tastes. So, I'm happy with this one. It'll see a lot of use. When the cheap Amazon bag wears out I might splurge on the bigger model for those times I need to fly somewhere for work and want to bring a laptop and my camera. ... show more

  • Versatile Small Camera Bag -- Looks Good Too!
My Fuji X-series walkaround kit is a body, the 10-24mm f/4, 35mm f/1.4, and 56mm f/1.2. The challenge has been to find a bag that isn’t too deep, and isn’t too wide. I narrowed the search down to three brands and then cut cardboard mockup to the interior dimensions to see how things would fit. I did my mock-up testing with an X-T3 (with the MHG-XT3 hand grip) – the “largest” of my Fuji bodies without a battery grip. The mockup of the Retrospective 5 just seemed a little better, with the left (short side) of the camera body down, leaving the grip for easier camera extraction. When just carrying gear in the bag, the body with the mounted 10-24mm goes in the larger cell; and the 35mm and 56mm in the smaller cell, joined by a double rear lens cap (two generic caps epoxied together). The decider was the extra storage space, which neither of the other two bags came even close to matching. It does make the bag a little bit thicker, but is a much more orderly solution. And all the closure options sealed the deal. The fabric is attractive and sturdy, while keep low key appearance. This is going to be a great bag for travel. [Photos show: Fuji X-T3 with 10-24mm lens mounted, 35mm and 56mm together in cell; Camera removed, showing short divider used to support lens and also provide storage location for Think Tank battery pouch; 35mm and 56mm lenses sharing a double rear lens cap.] ... show more

  • Perfect day-use camera bag
Sure, we've all got lots of bags, all with good features, none just right. This one is very nearly just right. Perfect size for mirrorless, possibly a bit tight for DSLR. Body with lens, two or more other lenses (depending on how big). And there are so many spaces for accessories that I'm still discovering them a year later. The deal-closer: pouch on the side for either longer lens or, yes!, water bottle. Perfect. Stick a snack bar in the front pouch and I'm ready for a day hike. (By the way, wear it across, not just hanging from one shoulder—better weight distribution.) Like any dippo photographer, I'll still check out the bags on line, but it's hard to imagine one better than this. P.S.: I got a used version 1 of the Retrospective 5, and version 2 is better, because of that nice side pouch and more compartments for accessories. If you get a used one, be sure it's V.2—look for the two grommet-holes on the front flap. ... show more

  • Excellent quality casual bag
I've got more than just a few camera bags, but found that I needed something for everyday casual use. This is what I found and love it. It is particularly well made, extremely well-thought out design with multiple options for how you keep it closed with velcro tabs. It comfortably fits my Nikon Df with a 24-70 f/2.8 lens and has room for two other lenses - I typically have a 135 f/2 and a 14 f/2.8 along with extra batteries. ... show more

  • A good shoulder bag for Olympus camera users
This shoulder bag can easily accommodate my Olympus OM-D Mark II body with the 7-14mm 2.8 Pro lens and TL-900 flash unit. There is also enough room for spare batteries and SD cards. I also appreciate this shoulder bag's small, simple design and robust construction--it allows me to quickly grab my camera so I can photograph my twin toddler boys as they play. ... show more

  • Perfection!
I absolutely love this camera bag! it is the perfect size with the greatest comfort. I was able to fit my DSLR with lens attached and a 50mm and 10-24mm Sigma lens and a few memory cards and batteries. Absolute perfection and very stylish. Will definitely continue to buy Think Tank.
