Lauren Stiller Rikleen's latest book, The Shield of Silence, examines how sexual harrassment and myriad other forms of power dynamics, gender harrassment, and gender bias continue to impact women (as well as the bystanders who observe this behavior) in the worforce, harming not only the individuals at whom the harassing and biased behaviors are directed, but the organizational culture as a whole. Mr. Rikleen's detailed analysis makes it clear to the reader why women, despite the reignited #MeToo movement, still often find silence the best strategy and how organizations can change their policies and culture to prevent the silencing of women. The Shield of Silence touches on how sexual harrassment and gender bias issues cross every sector, providing references to studies, anecdotes, and headline news stories that remind you how hard we have to work to ensure that women's voices will not be silenced any longer. Highly recommended reading for all HR, managerial, executives, and leadership roles.   • Meaningful Change Requires Accountability
Being held accountable is to be held responsible. Accountability fosters relationships, performance and happiness, yet we sometimes view being held accountable with stress and fear. Being accountable means we make clear what we are committed to, coupled with expressing our willingness to be responsible for meeting those commitments. We are increasingly finding that we only give lip service to our goals, talking the talk but not walking the walk, has not effected meaningful change. Ms. Rilkeen explains how the fear (and reality) of retaliation keeps the old power structures in place. More importantly, the author provides a clear pathway to create accountability, so that leaders can move beyond symbols of fairness to achieve on the ground results.   • This book has perfect timing!
This is a must read for those who are trying to shift organization culture and employee relations from within. As a previous HR leader, I find her material practical, evidence based, just-in-time, and well-written. Lauren has taken a controversial issue and framed it in a way that both men and women can discuss in healthy ways. I highly recommend as the conversation regarding power, sex, and microaggression cannot be a moment. Easy to read with relevant case examples, current studies & practical tips to address sexual harassment and other unsafe work conditions. A must read for both leadership & staff in organizations.

  • Informative But Not Helpful
Plenty of information about the problem, but little that's helpful about solving the problem. Suggestions are rather "preaching to the choir," "pie-in-the-sky" kinds of vague generalities nudged in the direction of people who are already on the same team, against the practice, and who are at the policy-making level of corporate America. Little to nothing is directed at victims looking for help who have little to no power to change workplace cultures that are defiantly refusing to acknowledge guilt or complicity. The second half was like "Yeah.....that's not good....you should really think about changing that...." **eye roll** If what you're looking for is data and testimonies about a few work sectors that you can quote when discussing the nature and spread of the problem, you may find this helpful. But if you're looking for concrete solutions, such as legal particulars you can take up to protect yourself or salvage your career, this isn't it. ... show more
