This concise book will help you realize where and why communication breakdown happens. Using our Big Brain means responding to situations by taking the time to think through just what our answer should be and responding. In stressful situations (especially when we're time stressed) we switch to Little Brain mode and react to situations, usually basing our actions on emotions instead of thinking logically about the situation and then responding. My favorite part was on avoiding what Kevin calls, "Time Ambushing." Everyone must avoid these time traps or the scenario below develops (and Little Brain communication happens) which leads to communication breakdown: "If you do not plan well and are in a rush, you think everyone around you should accommodate your needs. This leads to forcing an issue or question on others because it fits your time schedule - without pausing to ask yourself if it's the right time for them to address it. Without showing empathy, you pile on or add to others' anxieties by burdening them with new problems at a difficult time." Kevin lays out seven principles you should use to communicate effectively and build trust (you have to get the book to read about those). A lot of the content is common sense, but Kevin has a great way of showing how these scenarios develop without us even realizing it. This book is worth every dollar spent! ... show more

This book is easy to read and gives examples and illustrations that are easy to remember. My only suggestion to the author is that he change the sub-title to read: A simple guide to Effective Encounters in Life (Big Brain vs. Little Brain Communication). The scope of this book is definitely NOT limited to the business world. If family members were to read this book and take it's message to heart, there would be far more harmony at home. ... show more

I recently retired from teaching business communication courses for the Los Angeles Community College District. This is the best book of its kind that I have read since The One Minute Manager over 30 years ago. This would be the only book that I would need for my classes. I believe that it is a classic.
