  • Wanted to like it.. but keeps breaking
Style: Small Folding Rain and Windproof Umbrell... Color: Royal Blue
This umbrella is a really cool concept. Basically it opens up and closes using the included switch on the handle. It also opens inverted, so that it should keep rain from falling backwards onto you when it's closed. These are all great ideas, but the solution seems to be a little too 'high tech'. The first one got stuck and could not be closed any longer. The replacement arrived and the button to release would not actually work, and I had to dismantle the handle to free the button for initial use. Great concept! and durable! But not very reliable. ... show more

  • Impressive umbrella, heavy-duty, powerful open/close, great coverage, not too heavy to carry...
This is a well made, strongly-built umbrella. It has a pretty large canopy for a compact umbrella -- the arc is 46 inches and offers a coverage of 41" in diameter, so it is plenty roomy. The product description states this is a small size umbrella, but it is certainly large enough to keep me dry and comfortable. It folds down to just over a foot in length and about 3" in diameter and it isn't too heavy, so it can be tucked into a fairly large handbag or tote. A very wide band with a velcro strip holds the folds of the umbrella in place when it is not in use. It comes with a light-weight sleeve to keep it clean and neat during storage. After releasing the folds, umbrella snaps open or closed with a toggle button on the handle. This actually opens with considerably more velocity and force than I expected. Perhaps I'm just used to my old umbrella that struggles valiantly to open with a bit of effort... The umbrella closes even more powerfully and it does require a bit of hand strength to collapse the rod, imo. The inverted design is an excellent feature & directs water away from the user when opening as well as closing the umbrella. The handle is short and curved and fits easily in the hand; it has a loop for hanging. The shaft is very robust as is the runner that opens up the canopy. The stretchers and ribs are very large and strong. The entire undercarriage is perfectly designed and operates flawlessly. The fabric fabric of the canopy feels tough and durable. It doesn't rain very often where I live, but when it does it is comes down in buckets and is usually accompanied by strong winds. In the past, I've had several umbrellas that can't stand up to the gusts of wind, but this one feels sturdy enough to handle such conditions. I ordered this umbrella in black and it looks great. I was not previously aware of the Stromberg brand, but the quality of materials and manufacture is evident. This is an excellent umbrella, and it should last for years. At a price of $18.99 it outperforms several more expensive ones that I have had. I like to have my primary umbrella waiting by the front door and I also keep a second one in my car and I want both of them function as well as they look. During winter, I also tend to keep a small back-up umbrella in my bag, just in case I didn't think it looked like rain when I left my car, but turned out to need it later (I have a long walk from my car to work). I think this is umbrella is very impressive and well worth the modest price; I will definitely consider other styles in this brand. ... show more

  • Strong, quality construction
Like most people, I've had a lot of umbrellas over the years, mostly because I lose them. My first surprise was finding this umbrella in my mailbox; not many would fit. I was also surprised at the quality. The structural elements of the closing apparatus is much stronger than any other umbrella I've had that's in this price range. The mechanism is powerful; press the button on the handle, and it pops open with force. My older compact umbrella is not close to this one in that department; I have to shake it a bit to get it to open completely. This is the umbrella I want on hand for a sudden downpour. It's not small at 42 inches when open (I measured), which is plenty to keep me dry in just about anything short of a tropical storm. Another surprise is how the top snaps closed when I pressed the button the second time, whereas the shaft remains extended. Yet another surprise—pulling the extended shaft to close it requires a bit of strength, and a child might have a problem with that. It reminded me of stringing an archery bow. But I don't fault the product for that; it's just another indication of the overall sturdiness and quality of this umbrella. Another thing I like about this is that, even though the umbrella is black, it lets light through, which is always pleasant on a rainy day. The final thing I have to say about this is how much I like the reversed way it folds. When I first saw this type of umbrella advertised on TV, I assumed it to be merely a gimmick, but I've become a convert. It's definitely much easier to get it into a car while staying relatively dry. Honestly, I cannot think of anything I would suggest to improve this umbrella—except maybe providing someone to hold it for me. The only possible fault might be that the spring action is so strong that it could launch the umbrella some day. ... show more

  • Convenient
Style: Small Folding Rain and Windproof Umbrell... Color: Royal Blue
I have had a couple of larger golf umbrellas over the past handful of years, and they've been wonderful. However, they can be hard to get to from the front seat if you pull into the store or your office parking lot in a downpour. Hence, I thought this might be a good replacement that I could keep under my seat. This has a good, solid heft to it, and while I haven't taken it out in a tropical storm or anything yet, this doesn't feel like your typical small folding umbrella that will blow open and backwards in a breeze. It does have that easy-press button that opens it with one push. It is rather different that it folds upwards. I have had larger umbrellas with this design, but not one that folds. I imagine this will take a bit longer to dry. Regardless, it fits perfectly under the seat. ... show more
