Description

A gambling craze is sweeping 19th-century St. Petersburg, yet a dashing Russian army captain (Anton Halbrook, The Red Shoes) is too impoverished to participate. But when he learns that an aging countess (Three-time Oscar- nominee Dame Edith Evans, The Whisperers) may hold the ultimate key to gambling riches, the desperate young officer will stop at nothing to steal the sinister secret for himself. When fortunes are won and lost with the turn of a card, will one man wager his very soul on a final twist of fate? Yvonne Mitchell (Demons of the Mind) co-stars in this brilliant British chiller directed by Thorold Dickinson (Gaslight), featuring extraordinary cinematography by Otto Heller (Peeping Tom, The Picross File) and based on the celebrated short story by Russian poet Alexander Pushkin (The Eagle). • A Pushkin Classic in Spades!
I'm ashamed to say I'd never heard of the 1949 British film of Alexander Pushkin's classic story THE QUEEN OF SPADES until it popped up as a "suggestion" on Amazon. (Thanks, guys!) Turns out it's a brilliant adaptation, with the incomparable Dame Edith Evans in her film debut as the Countess. It also demonstrates the almost tangible power of black-and-white cinematography over color to capture the menace of the supernatural in every subtlety of light and shadow. A "must-see" for lovers of "Russian lit" and an old-fashioned ghost story. ... show more

  • Chilling and Unforgettable
This is a marvelous, unforgettable story of how greed can destroy a life, or many lives. Anton Walbrook is terrific as a Russian army officer who is jealous of his fellow officers who come from wealthy and powerful families. He feels they get all the breaks, all the promotions, all the glory. He sets about to exact his revenge on the world, with a bit of supernatural assistance. He would sell his soul and use anyone, any way he can (including an old woman and a young, innocent woman), to gain money and power. The entire story is startling and powerful, with a chilling climax. I saw this movie on TV many years ago, and I have been searching for it for quite some time. I was so happy to find it on Amazon. Watching it again, after all these years, I was still deeply affected. ... show more

  • Melodrama Falls Well Short of Being a Classic
An interesting concept, based on the main character's idée fixe about becoming a successful gambler in order to win social acceptance in his circle, is squandered in a rather theatrical film where even the snow, in the exterior scenes, doesn't look remotely real. For the actors, many of whom were making their cinematic debuts, it's all posh British accents throughout even though the social milieu is meant to be St Petersburg in 1806! I found the movie to be contrived and I cannot understand why it is seen as a classic in some quarters, because the cinematography, dialogue and acting seem to be no better than average. ... show more

  • What a great old movie like the original Gaslight.
A excellent remastered print. It's vary involved and comes to a vary good conclusion!! I showed it to friends who had never seen it or even heard of it. They loved it!! Thanks John.

  • A Beautiful and Opulent Oddity, Must Viewing
I had this film on VHS and am thrilled to have it on DVD as it's one of my favorites. I was excited to have a commentary which is full of facts contributed by Philip Horne, but after 10 minutes found it hard to enjoy his somewhat deadly style of delivery and especially the howler mispronounciations of a host of names and titles that ought to have been vetted before being read. It's not something I'll listen to over and over but I'm glad to know the minute details of the film and its makers. ... show more
