Description

Discover places where a day is longer than a year, where hailstones are made of diamonds, and where a mountain looms twice the size of Everest. These and more are all to be found in The Planets. The Sun’s gravity holds in thrall eight planets, each with an entourage of moons, as well as dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets. The Planets takes you on a dazzling visual tour. From the Solar System’s fiery heart, travel to rocky worlds such as tiny Mercury scorched by the Sun. Then witness Venus swathed in a sulfurous haze, and go to the outer reaches to visit planets such as gas giant Jupiter, which is 120 times the size of Earth. Using 3-D models and photography from NASA and the European Space Agency, The Planets describes each one, as well as the extraordinary endeavors of space exploration. Edited by space scientist Maggie Aderin-Pocock, this book is enthralling reading for everyone interested in astronomy and space exploration. Read more

  • An amazing book!
This book is really amazing! The pictures stir the imagination and please the eye, and the text is amazingly informative. I used this with my son (second grade) as an introduction to the solar system, and I have to admit it was a little too advanced for him. He did enjoy the pictures a lot and the info I selected to read to him was understandable, but I did have to pick and choose. This is in no way a complaint though, as I plan to reuse this book in a few years, and that will allow me to present a great deal of new info. Overall I am incredibly pleased with this book and I plan to use it for years to come. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the planets, or for a homeschool library. ... show more

  • Ten starts for this Smithsoneon publication
Wish I could give this book ten stars! The layout, great photos and what I appreciated was all the bullet notes supporting a very readable text. Got it for my 10 yr grandson to peak his interest. But the book is for all ages. I'm 75 yrs and think The Planets is fascinating. Do not hesitate to add this to your library 🌎🌗 ... show more

  • Great book on the planets
A lot of what we thought we knew about the planets has changed since the 80s This book brought back my childhood in a way. When I was in school I had a book on the planets, called "Our Universe" , I think that was the title. It was all that we knew up to then. This book is much nicer and obviously updated since the 80s. Great pictures and short historical recap. ... show more

  • Very cool book, quality control iffy
This content of this book is very informative and the graphics and text are well made and well written. My son (5) loves to read about the planets and the visuals in this book are his favorite. Unfortunately the book came with some pages fused together. Seems they were not cut fully through during manufacturing. I had to cut them apart with scissors which lead to some wonkyness. Overall I would recommend this book. It's 250+ pages and is a huge bargain at this price point. Definitely a 5 star purchase if not for the quality control issues. ... show more
