    • Trouble with this music bar
I ordered one of these months ago and had returned it. Its a great concept if it works. The reason I returned it was because I could not get it to connect to my smart devices, I tried multiple devices "Smart Phones "2 Samsung and 1 Iphone, I also tried a new Ipad and several other smart pads", nothing would work. The unit would turn on fine, it would also see when I pressed a key but it just would not connect to a smart device which means you could not use it to learn to play, smart device connection is required. I even used the cable to connect directly to the devices, nope, did not work. Not sure if it was just the one unit but I just returned it for a refund. I like how the return works with Amazon, pretty easy. Great concept if it works ... show more

    • It works with Windows and Synthesia!
I have been waiting for this device as an alternative to the Pianomaestro system which I have been using for about 3 years. The Pianomaestro has given a big boost to my piano playing and makes me feel like a pro pianist, which I am not. It is far from perfect with a lot of flaws and I have been looking forward to an alternative, which has now arrived. First there was the One Piano which had the LED lights on but I already own a Suzuki baby grand and a Yamaha DGX 650, thus did not want to commit to another digital piano. Besides, it was incompatible with Windows which was a deal breaker for me. The Yamaha works well with the Pianomaestro, which makes it possible to learn a complicated piece in a few hours instead of going through several months of frustration when trying to learn a piece from sheet music. I can play much faster with the guide lights than from sheet music. In order to make this review more useful, I need to make a brief comparison between the two systems. The Pianomaestro is limited in that it works in the center of the keyboard on about 4.5 octaves and if the sheet contains notes outside these octaves, you need to figure out from the sheet where to hit those keys. The 'maestro works best with Synthesia instead its own software, uses a Windows driver, called the Connector, needed with a Windows PC and the driver frequently crashes, causing the lights to freeze which is very annoying because it interrupts your playing and you need to restart the program or even unplug the device to reset the lights. You need 3 way connections between the Pianomaestro, digital piano and PC with two wires in order for the lights to wait for you. I still rely on this method because I do not play fast enough to keep up with the lights when they are going at regular speed. Customer service is virtually non-existent and once you buy the device, you are on your own. They have not made any updates to the driver or the device since it first came out, which is a shame. It has been getting a little better though over time with Windows and Synthesia updates. The One Hi- Lite, on the other hand, reaches all across the keyboard, rests on the keys and uses sensors to detect key action; needs only one USB connection with computer (or iPad) and the sensors detect key movement, so you only need one connection with the computer. It seems like a more user friendly system. However, it was first released for Ipad and Android only which was rather annoying for PC users like myself. I have a large collection of Midi files on the PC and have a dedicated big screen for digital sheet music, whereas the screen size is rather limited with IPAD/android. There is still no mention of Windows compatibility on the website or even the user manual and my repeated e-mails to the One Piano Group failed to get this question answered in the last two years. Online forums stated that this device is incompatible with Windows. I was curious to try and bought it in the hope that it would work with the Ipad and become PC compatible sooner or later. It was a frustrating experience to get it to work. First, I could not even pair it with the Ipad, wired or through Blutooth, nor my laptop; after a few hours of experimentation, managed to get it running with my PC and the Windows Synthesia software (not the Piano One). It works much better with Synthesia than its own software and you have the flexibility of using it with your own Midi files instead of being stuck with a limited online selection. By now I got it to work with the Ipad and the One Piano app also, but much prefer the PC/Synthesia combination which is more flexible and user friendly. The lights work as long as you position the bar on the keyboard correctly, which takes some experimentation. Even so, it has glitches and some LEDs do not light up in the correct order/location or do not extinguish on time when running the playback program. I noticed that when playing a particular cord through Synthesia, sometimes inversions of that cord may lit up on the bar. This can be distracting but you can work around it as long as you pay attention to the sheet music or the bars moving down the screen. Overall, it works well when set up correctly and delivers what it promised; I prefer it to the Pianomaestro system which I hope to replace with this. It has more potential for future developments. I cannot wait to see a revised, improved version coming out in the next couple of months or in the next year. I noticed that most of the bad reviews apply the to faulty connection with Ipads. People are not even aware that it now works with Windows and Synthesia. Suggested improvements to the manufacturer: 1. Improved synchronization with the software and player, so that the lights come on and extinguish with correct timing and order. This may also be affected by keyboard size and types on different pianos. 2. Improved and smoother Windows interface. 3. I would like to see different color lights for white keys and black keys, which would improve key recognition while playing (the Pianomaestro uses green LEDs for white keys, red LEDs for black keys) 4. Further improvements in the proprietary software, with a Windows version. I currently much prefer Synthesia for my playing. I look forward to future revisions! ... show more

    • Wonderful idea, but needs more work
This unfortunately did not fit on our piano, but just barely. The cord is too bulky and prevents the bass end of the unit from sitting properly on the keys, so they do not register. Before I purchased it, I noted that other reviewers had the same complaint. If the microUSB receptacle were on the top of the unit instead of on the side, this might work on more keyboards. Furthermore, the extra music costs money, which is fine, but some people might not know that. The free music is out of copyright classical music, and the reason I wanted to get this product is because I was trained on classical music and was hoping to play music I actually listen to. There are products for the guitar which my family has used to get up to speed rather quickly, and I was hoping that this would be equivalent. ... show more

    • Not useful, waste of a lot of money
For one the the guide light does not go with the music, it just stays on instead of coming and off for the duration the key had to be held and number of times key is struck. The idea of the product is good hence I bought it, but this implementation is lousy and hence I returned it the same day I bought it. ... show more

    • Great system for self-learning the piano
I always regret that I didn't keep up with the piano as a child, and finding the time for lessons as a working adult has proved close to impossible. I also just wasn't good with trying to teach myself with books or online videos or whatever. Music is, essentially, like learning a language, and you need guidance. This learning system is a real boon! The light bar sits over the piano keys (must be a regular piano or a full size keyboard) and the sensors show which notes are being pressed. Load the app on a tablet (Android or iOS and at least 10 inches so you can see it comfortably) and plug in the light bar to the tablet (microUSB-to-lightning adapter needed for iPads) and you're ready to roll! The app has a very good library of free sheet music (multiple genres and skill levels), and it combines with the light bar to show you the note to play. Simple and effective. The app sheet music also has numbers for fingers, so you can see which fingers you should be playing notes with. The classical music genre appears to have the most free music, but the app lets you buy other pieces as well. A couple notes. The light bar must be powered, so you need to have your piano near an outlet. Also, the light bar MUST be on a full size piano or keyboard. Even then, you may have to slide it in and out a bit to work. And, of course, there is no magic bullet for learning piano. It takes practice. But this system offers an easy means of doing so, making it rewarding enough to keep practicing. Now, decades later, I might finally learn to play piano! ... show more

    • Didn't fit Piano, Great Concept, Also would not work on my IPad
Product is a bit misleading, size doesn't fit all Pianos, software is not intuitive, or easy to setup and work with device. I didn't get either one synced to work together. I also had to buy additional equipment to get this to hook up.
