  • Outstanding book for aspiring business owners and humans who want to be inspired
Hilarious, beautifully written, and packed with practical insights and surprisingly intimate details about what it really takes to build a small business that cares about ethics and staff, while simultaneously being profitable. I laughed out loud at anecdotes like what it requires to get a beer permit for a restaurant, or how hiring employees can feel like dating, but the serious and insightful advice was profound too. How to pour your heart into a business in spite of challenge, to dare to lead differently, and what it means to build a restaurant environment that actually treats women and folks from underrepresented backgrounds well and stands against harassment all too common in the business world and food industry in particular. For those of us who want to find meaning and purpose in our day jobs, Wade provides guidance and real life inspiration for approaching our work as something more than just a soul-sucking paycheck. Whether or not you are a fan of cheesy carbs, this is highly recommended reading! ... show more

  • Funnnnnnnnnnny! and insightful
This book sneaks up on ya with how funny it is! You think you're digging into some business insights - which are there in spades! - and then you find yourself laughing out loud alone in your room more times than you'd expect. What a fun read. AND Erin Wade as the author has got the real business chops with how successful this restaurant was, while innovating towards better work culture and work practices. Color me truly impressed. ... show more

  • Inspiring and interesting!
I expected this to be like your typical MBA marketing book but it was so much more than that! If you’re interested in how to build teams and lead people,,or how to create a culture of great customer service, or even just how to make work meaningful, you should read this book. (It's also a fascinating window into how hard it is to start a restaurant, which will make you appreciate your next great meal out so much more…) ... show more

  • Gift yourself the gift of making time to read this book
Insightful, humorous, wise. This book is a joy to read. Filled with poignant vignettes that are deceptively short for the depth of their content, it was a page turner (not something I can say about every business book). I learned while reading without even realizing it, and the deeply personal and reflective stories interwoven with business advice is unique and addictive. Not your average business book and something much, much better. ... show more

  • WTF I cried reading a business book
“Heard” for the first time in my life, I saw myself over and over in the experiences Wade describes. From being the only woman in the room, to the debilitating moments of self doubt & lack of models, to just being able to admit that I just love good amd want to work in the industry—giving up far more “prestigious” work to serve people meals. If you’re female, or identify female, this book has more solutions for you than you’ll read in a whole career’s worth of other books or classes. If you’ve been in business for any length of time (and female) you’ll learn more here that you can immediately apply than anywhere else. You’ll also feel seen & heard. I’m not a cryer, and WTF I’m crying reading a business book about Mac & Cheese. This woman is brilliant. Read it & share it, then implement. ... show more

  • Valuable Read
This is much more than a business book. The clarity of Erin Wade's stories that led her to build a business beloved by her community, empowered by its employees, and successful in non-traditional ways is a page-turner! This compelling book is summed up with, "All we did was decide to invest in our own people, and in empowering them to make a difference". I hope this book sets a precedent for business in the future. We need compassion, trust, empowerment and integrity and Erin Wade shows how to do that with her Homeroom restaurant and with The Mac and Cheese Millionaire. ... show more

  • The most misleading chapter titles ever published
This isn't a book about building a business. It's a journal of self-importance mixed with definitely-hyperbolic stories and a complete absence of the challenges actually faced by real businesses. I cannot recommend skipping this book enough.
