I remember my junior year abroad (many decades ago) in Denmark walking in one of the art museums in Copenhagen and taking notes on the various styles of Greek vases. Having read several other books on Greek vase paintings, I was a little hesitant to buy another; but this quarto edition published by the Getty contains such large and stunning photographs that my fears were wasted. The text explains the subjects depicted in detail, though it mostly ignores the technicalities and history of pot painting. This is a lovely book, with wonderful pictures. The vases have lots of activity in their designs, which is very interesting. The authors lead you through how the artists of the time depicted various subjects commonly found in the vases and talk of the different symbols and their meanings. The best general introduction to Greek vases now available. A must for anyone with an interest in this amazing art form. The photos from the Getty and British Museum are gorgeous and the text is a wonderfully concise and lucid survey of the best known painters and the images they created.
