Description

Screen greats Bob Hope (My Favorite Blonde, Road to Utopia) and Paulette Goddard (Nothing But the Truth, Reap the Wild Wind) co-star in another comedy- thriller, a year after their smash hit The Cat and the Canary. Ghosts and gags collide in this witches’ brew of laughs, with Bob Hope as a Manhattan radio commentator who finds himself marooned on an island of the walking dead! Larry Lawrence (Hope), sought in connection with a murder he did not commit, eludes New York police by hiding in a steamer trunk. Soon the trunk (and Larry) are aboard a ship bound for Cuba, where the trunk’s owner, pretty Mary Carter (Goddard), is sailing to take possession of a recent inheritance: a “haunted” castle. Sensing that Mary is in danger, Larry and his valet Alex (Willie Best, Whispering Ghosts) precede her to the island, which is inhabited by a ghost, a zombie and perhaps even a flesh-and-blood fiend. There’s romance, comedy and chills as Hope and Goddard contend with earthly and un-earthly foes—and try to keep from ending up as ghosts themselves. Director George Marshall (Murder, He Says) also directed the 1953 remake, Scared Stiff, starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. The stellar cast includes Paul Lukas (The Lady Vanishes), Anthony Quinn (Zorba the Greek) and Paul Fix (El Dorado). Special Features: -Brand New 2K Master -NEW Audio Commentary by Author/Film Historian Lee Gambin -TRAILERS FROM HELL with with Larry Karaszewski -Theatrical Trailer -Optional English Subtitles

  • Very entertaing version of an even older film and play
I love old movies. The older the better. Yes, the sound quality can be poor as compared to current standards, but if you know about the history of the equipment used to create the film; the condition in which they were likely stored; and the quality of speakers and recording equipment which were used at the time; then you will not be bothered by the poor sound quality at all. You will simply feel that the poor sound quality is a normal part of the viewing experience. It is completely unfair to judge an antique by modern standards. Instead, focus on the story, the filming techniques, the costumes, the furnishings, the architecture, the dialog, and the historical social significance of the film. It is also completely unfair to judge the past by present values. Are there offensive bits in old films which would never be tolerated today? Most probably, but why be offended when you can just as easily choose to understand how far we have come? In some respects we have come far, socially. In other respects, we have seriously digressed. I also like to see the contrast in the ways society has devolved as compared to the time in which they made these old films. Why bother watching historical documents, if you don’t learn from them? PROS: Condition as expected. I enjoyed it. CONS: As in most antique media, you usually you have to resize the aspect at which they are played. I consider this to be a “normal” part of the experience. COMPS: As compared to modern films, adjust your level of expectation. When you approach them in this way, you will not be disappointed. VERDICT: Met or exceeded my expectations. Good/great value for money. I hope you found this information helpful. Have a great day! ~Savvy Shopper ... show more

  • funny
The story and action are good. It is funny but the picture quality was bad and so was the sound. It was a great black and white movie and should not be colorized.

  • Early Bob Hope vehicle with some great one-liner comebacks
I have copied some of Lawrance M. Bernabo's cogent review and edited it to my view: The plot of this 85-minute black & white comedy has Bob Hope as Lawrence Lawrence (Larry), a radio star who has made his reputation as a muckraker. Fleeing from a murder in a hotel he mistakenly thinks he committed, he ends up in the trunk of Mary Carter (Paulette Goddard) who is on her way to Cuba, where she has inherited the haunted Black Island and its haunted Castillo Maldito. Once on the island, Mary runs into the charming Parada (Paul Lukas), her old friend Geoff Montgomery (Richard Carlson), and the surviving scheming Mederos twin (Anthony Quinn and Anthony Quinn). Meanwhile, at the castle awaiting Larry and Mary are the Mother Zombie (Virginia Brissac) and her giant zombie son (Noble Johnson). Larry and his trusted valet Alex (Willie Best) go ahead to the castle to make sure everything is safe for Mary, at which point wackiness ensues. The biggest downside of this film is that it embraced black stereotypes throughout; however, you must consider that this was a product of 1940. It is useful as an illustration of what society's expectations and treatment of blacks was during that period. I bought this to show to my teen-age children who have no idea of what society was like in the 20th century much less before WWII; as well as, to show who Bob Hope was and his type of comedy. My favorite one-liner/come-back of Hope's was in the scene where Mary, Larry and Geoff Montgomery are present and Larry asks Geoff what he knows about zombies. Larry, "Maybe you know what a zombie is. Geoff explains "When a person dies and is buried, it seems a certain voodoo priest who . . . who have the power to bring him back to life." Mary, "How horrible." Geoff, "It's worse than horrible because a zombie has no will of his own. You see them sometimes walking around blindly, with dead eyes, following orders, not knowing what they do, not caring." Larry, "You mean like Democrats?" This is a light comedy written, produced and acted by products of the early 20th century with their view of the world. If you are not so politically sensitive as to recoil from the lack of 21st century political correctness which evolved seven decades later, you can appreciate the talent and chemistry of Hope and Goddard. ... show more

  • Fans of the film will like the extras included on this DVD
I saw this film originally on TV when I was in my pre-teens on TV. As a big fan of Bob Hope, it is one of my favorite films that he starred in. The quality of the video and sound are excellent on this DVD. The acting is very good, as is the writing. Paulette Goddard does a very good job playing the roles of the "love interest" and "damsel in destress", without overacting. She shows the talent that made her a star. There are scenes that also gave her an opportunity to show how attractive she was. There are interesting and informative extras about Bob Hope's years of entertaining U.S. and allied troops in combat zones in three wars. ... show more

  • Classic haunted hijinks with Bob Hope
I remembered this movie from my childhood days but for some reason you rarely see it on TV these days. One would expect it would be part of Turner Classics Movies library. I am not a big fan of Bob Hope movies of the 50s and 60s but his early work is a lot more appealing. Also featured in the film are Paulette Goddard as the romantic interest, Paul Lukas and a very young Anthony Quinn playing twin brothers. The setting of an island off the coast of Cuba is a quite unique for a ghost movie. My main complaint is that it takes too long for the action to switch to the main mystery of the film. It is much more atmospheric when the film reaches this stage. But for something different to watch on Halloween it suited my purposes. I've grown a bit fatigued with the current crop of slasher movies where the emphasis is on gory mayhem. ... show more
