Description

Now with a revolutionary new “Climate Battery” design for near-net-zero heating and cooling"Jerome Osentowski is a master of simple, elegantly frugal, eminently practical indoor gardens."―Amory LovinsIn this groundbreaking book, Jerome Osentowski, one of North America’s most accomplished permaculture designers, presents a wholly new approach to a very old horticultural subject. In The Forest Garden Greenhouse, he shows how bringing the forest garden indoors is not only possible, but doable on unlikely terrain and in cold climates, using near-net-zero technology. Different from other books on greenhouse design and management, this book advocates for an indoor agriculture using permaculture design concepts―integration, multi-functions, perennials, and polycultures―that take season extension into new and important territory.Chapters Include:Expanding the Possible with Season Extension The History and Mechanics of the Climate Battery Considerations for Building Your Own Greenhouse Several Off-site Case StudiesAnd much more! Osentowski, director and founder of Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute (CRMPI) incorporates deep, holistic permaculture design with practical common sense. His greenhouse designs, which can range from the backyard homesteader to commercial greenhouses, are completely ecological and use a simple design that traps hot and cold air and regulates it for best possible use. With detailed design drawings, photos, and profiles of successful greenhouse projects on all scales, this inspirational manual will considerably change the conversation about greenhouse design. • Excellent book!
A clear and warm writing about one particular experience that shows the quid of permaculture. Great..

  • Brilliant
The battery climate technology is a fascinating concept for making a four-season greenhouse without losing a fortune in energy expenditures and for advancing permaculture and circular resource economies. I really appreciated the author's lifelong commitment and hands-on knowledge coupled with his disciplinary knowledge in growing and soil biology. Thank you for a compelling read and a new vocabulary for greenhouse-based food production. ... show more

  • Sustainable Instructions
The book gives great information on building your own "green" greenhouse. By adding some extra construction at the beginning, you can reap big rewards from then on in both heating and cooling costs. Numerous examples are also shown.

  • Awesomeness!
'Climate Battery' is essentially actively moving interior solar-heated air through subsoil tubing 5x hourly... that said, there is a bit more to the concept, as well as CRMPI-specific approaches... lots of detail to be gleaned from the case studies, no doubt much to improve upon and/or adapt to local needs and resources... buy the book, totally worth it =) ... show more

  • Really enjoy some of his concepts
Really enjoy some of his concepts. I'm not sure this would work in our long, hot summers of south central US, but there are lots of things you can adapt no matter where you live. The photos are also good. Hope to have a nice indoor green paradise someday soon.

  • A Bible for gardeners!
I absolutely love this book. It is a Bible and a must have for any gardener. I only wish I lived close enough to see Jeromes greenhouses firsthand and meet the man himself. A truely inspiring read and one I will be keeping and refering back to for years to come. So impressive and acheiveable!

  • Up the learning curve from gardening to permaculture, storing solar heat in the soil.
Excellent information. Gives good rule for matching air circulation to greenhouse volume. Great information on soil building and plant succession and use of recycled building materials. An inspiring and thorough introduction to permaculture in a challenging location.

  • Great For Greenhouse Growers
Very interesting book with lots of pics and info on how this gentleman made Forest Garden greenhouses in his cold climate. Tells how to do it for yourself. Thoroughly enjoyed it and keep picking it up to re-read parts.
