  • Helpful for ELL teachers
I bought this for my CLAD credential class, and I’ve continued to use it after receiving my credential. It has great activities, ideas, supports, and scaffolds. A must for teachers who have any EL students!

  • Every Good Teacher Needs This Toolbox!!!
As a newer teacher in the field of ESL, I don't have my personal toolbox filled of strategies to help my kiddos. This book provides teachers, new and seasoned alike, with a multitude of strategies in the four domains. These strategies are kid tested and approved. Some were geared towards the older kids, but I found ways to adapt it to my younger students. This book gives you 45 instructional strategies, from book talks, interactive word walls, concept attainment and inductive learning to error correction, games, TPR, and differentiation. A big favorite too is the beginning and end of the year strategies. I've been implementing many strategies already with my kiddos and they've been very engaged (always tricky at the end of the school year!) This book is helpful to me as an ESL teacher, but I wish I had this when I was a classroom teacher for 8 years and had no idea what to do what a beginning English Learner was plopped in my class! I think any classroom teacher would benefit as well reading this, because let's face it - all students are language learners! For the techy teachers out there, the authors have included many links on each strategy as well as a chapter to tech in the classroom as well. Larry Ferlazzo has a great website too, which you should definitely visit!! ... show more

  • Fantastic!
Ive just completed my coursework for my Masters in teaching ESL and have been using this book for ideas and strategies as I prepare for my first year as a high school ELL teacher. Must read!!

  • It's BIG!
I have a love/hate relationship with the size of this book. It's great that it has lots of space in the margins and large font making it very easy to read, but it is certainly not portable. I would love for another edition to come out that's printed on thinner paper with smaller text. I could do without the "what could go wrong" section entirely. It would save a lot of space and lighten the book significantly. I think some minor tweaks to the general layout/structure of the chapters and this could be a perfect resource for all teachers of English learners. ... show more

  • Speed and Quality
I love Amazon's service in delivering this book so quickly. I had it in my hands the next day and I placed the order at night. The book is very informative, detailed but simple enough to follow the recommendations provided. The ESL Team that I supervise will start a book study with this resource to maximize our time with students that would benefit from different strategies suggested in the book. Thanks for offering this "toolbox" for teachers of English Language Learners. I love that the research behind each strategy is presented individually in each section. It's an amazing collection for any teacher. Thank you! ... show more

  • Made my Bookshelf!
I put this book on the part of my bookshelf where I have easy access. The title is so appropriate! It IS a toolbox for ELs and every teacher should have one. Indeed there are hundreds of practical ideas. Ferlazzo and Sypnieski have been working with ELLs for years and make it so simple for teachers to understand. For example, the authors explain each strategy; explain why the strategy is effective; and discuss the research. Thank you. Dr. Jim Ewing (Author of "Math for ELLs. As Easy as Uno, Dos, Tres." ... show more

  • A staple in your first year teaching toolkit
I'm a student teacher ending my 1 year program in May and I absolutely love this book. It has so much information and is organized perfectly. Also, the strategies and examples are extremely clear and I've even had the chance to implement a lot in my student teaching lesson plans and my cooperating teachers/master teachers have asked where I got my idea from after being impressed by the engagement and effectiveness of my lessons. I totally recommend this book, especially for first year teachers! ... show more
