This is a great book that devotes a page to every AKC-recognized dog breed. It gives a brief history, major characteristics, and a short story about a famous or interesting dog for each breed. Pages are all full color with big, clear photos. The book strikes a perfect balance between providing good information while not getting too in-depth. I borrowed this from the library with my five year old in mind, but my seven year old is the one who can't put it down. I am here to buy her very own copy. This should be #1 on the list for any young dog lover! Edited to note: When we got our recently purchased copy from Amazon, my daughter noticed that there were several breeds listed which hadn't been in the library's older copy. I purchased this book for my daughter's 9th birthday. She wanted a book with lots of real dog pictures in it so she could draw them correctly. I saw this book online and since it's from the American Kennel Club, knew it would be a good representation of the most popular dog breeds around. Boy was I right! This book has great color photos of each breed and interesting facts too. My daughter loved this book! She is also using it to draw dogs from (drawing is her passion). If you have a child who loves dogs and talks about them all day long and night this is the perfect book for them. My 6 year old daughter loves animals and dogs are #1. She is constantly looking through this book and knows so many more breeds of dogs now and all about them. It is so nice to watch her learn about something she is so passionate about. This is the best book by far for kids and adults to learn the most common AKC breeds. It is one of the resources used by 4-H when asking Dog Showmanship and Dog Knowledge Bowl questions. Plus it's just a fun and interesting book with colored pictures of each dog, layed out so it's not like you're studying but just enjoying a read. Highly recommend. ... show more

Great book. Using it for 4H. It's a bit dated so is behind by nearly 50 breeds, but that's alright. It has wonderful full color pictures.
