  • One of the best
I have a number of classical guitar books, many of them with the same pieces in various transcription. This book , however, has a number of unexpected and very wonderful transcriptions - basically advanced beginner to intermediate , maybe some a little beyond that. All the transcriptions have depth and sonority and bring out the beauty of the guitar. There is also a link to downloadable audio files played by the author. I highly recommend this guitar compendium. Contents: 33 pages of technical studies - Sor, Tarrega, Giuliani, Carcassi and Aguado. The remaining 123 pages include works by Bach - Air on G String, Jesu Joy, Cello Suite 1 Beethoven - Adagio from Pathetique, Fur Elise, Moonlight Sonata Brahms - Lullaby Chopin - Nocturne Opus 9 -2, Prelude Opus 28 -20 Debussy - Claire de Lune, La Fille aux Cheveux Delibes - Flower Duet Faure - Pavane Grieg - Mountain King, Morning Mood Peer Gynt Masenent - Thais Mozart - Clarinet Concerto 2nd, Piano Concerto 21, Rondo alla Turca Pachelbel - Canon D ( book's version played by Michael Christian Durrant on you tube) Puccini - Nessun Dorma Ravel - Bolero Satie - Gnossienne 1; Gymnopedie 1 and 2 Schubert - Ave Maria Schumann Träumerei Tchaikovsky - Dance of Sugar Plum Fairy Verdi - La forza del Destino Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries ... show more

  • Gateway to playing great pieces of classical guitar music, just add time, effort, and patience
I wanted to wait a while to write my review, I am no one special and have not taken any master classes, very few classes actually, just a normal person that enjoys all types of music played on guitar... What a terrific collection of classical pieces of many types. Almost want to say it's a greatest hits collection, but then folks tastes might differ. Love the TAB along with the normal musical notation. Hint, if your tab rendition does not sound like the audio (includes log in code to listen or download) read the actual music! Might help a light bulb illuminate. For me the tab useful only for initial roughing out the music, but there it's very helpful... helpful, but I wont use the word easy for any of these as playing every note perfectly might take some serious quality time and of course patience. Great news is that your time and patience will be rewarded, the pieces are to me very satisfying to learn and to play correctly. There are more virtuoso transcriptions out there, but all the pieces I have played in this book are more than suitable and instantly recognizable and appreciated in most venues. My thanks to all that brought this book to market, and a very special thanks to the author. "Thank You". Very little criticism of this book. Yes, the TAB notation typeface for me too small and at times difficult to tell a 3 from an 8, or both from a 0... for me that meant taking to an enlarging copier and upscaling to 'legal size', and I can avoid wearing glasses. I have also cut off the binding and 3 hole punched the pages so they'll lay flat. That said, the book a wealth of rewarding pieces to play and in my opinion a bargain given that it is a one stop shop for these pieces. If you are someone that is playing guitar and interested in taking on some classical repertoire to expand your sounds and skills, this Classical Guitar Compendium has my highest recommendation. Be prepared to be challenged and rewarded proportionally to the amount of effort and time you are willing to spend in it. Notice I have avoided using the term EASY anywhere in my review here. ... show more

Mrs. Mermikides did an excellent job with every arrangement. This book is more intermediate and some of the songs are difficult but they are very playable and if you’re looking for a book to practice a masterpiece from, this book is it. The notes and music are arranged from a professional standpoint unlike other arrangements that are advertised as “easy” where they sound nothing like the original. It contains lots of studies by Tárrega, Sor, Carcassi, Giuliani, and Aguado. The song list contains music by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Schumann, Satie, Debussy and more. The font is slightly smaller than other books and there’s little pima info. However, it’s the best guitar book I’ve purchased by far. It will be the last book I buy as well since it contains a big variety. It is much better than paying for an individual piece of sheet music for $20++. This book has it all. It also comes with a login to listen to the music and the TAB is very accurate. It’s a fun book and I am planning on using it for the rest of my life since it contains the most beautiful collection of masterpieces that I eventually want to learn. ... show more

  • Happy Purchase
I've gone through the first eight exercises/pieces and played one piece in the repertoire (Jesu/Joy of Man's Desiring), Bach and just that alone was worth the price for me. The criticisms I've read seem petty and/or contrived. If you want spiral bound you'd have to pay more. If you don't want tab well there's plenty of that available on this site for classical guitar. If it's not dark enough well I don't know what to tell you cause I don't see a problem there. If you are a fairly decent guitarist but have not had classical guitar training I would highly recommend this volume because Bridget gives you an 8 song crash course in classical guitar technique. It's important because what you're playing might sound pretty good but from a technique perspective could be totally wrong. It will make you a better guitarist no matter what style you prefer. I haven't had time to check out the online audio but I'm sure it's great and I will get to it eventually. I normally prefer a CD with my music books but they don't do that much anymore. The pro of getting a disc with your book is convenience; the cons are higher cost, more returns, bad for the environment etc. so I get the strategy just would prefer the former. I'm still giving this 5 stars. If I have a reason to change that rating later I'll come back and do so. ... show more
