Description

Learning from others' mistakes is always more efficient and less costly than committing them yourself. This book is packed with practical information that will enable potters to successfully complete the many steps in pottery production. Making functional pottery or ceramic sculpture entails different skill sets and processes in forming clay, drying clay, glazing, and firing. Any one of these steps can cause failures. As ceramics consultant Jeff Zamek points out, under ideal conditions a beginning or advanced student would be guided by a teacher at every step; mistakes and bad habits would be caught as they occurred and corrected. While such learning situations are rare today, this book fills the gap. As Zamek says, "This book offers you forty years of wisdom, generated by my students' and my client ceramics companies' issues with clays, glazes, and kiln firing." With its solutions to common problems, this guide helps potters to succeed. Read more

  • Top ten pottery book in my library
This book was a gift from the author. I have not finished reading it yet, but I want to post a review before life and forgetfulness intrudes because this is a wonderful book and well worth having. I am early on in my pottery learning--about 5 years in, which means I have had a chance to make a lot of mistakes and develop an understanding of how complex and multi faceted pottery is. Being self taught, and never someone who is content with being a "surface learner" I have begun to dig deeper into the mysteries of glaze chemistry and other aspects of ceramic science to make my work better and more consistent. (No kiln gods in my studio). One day my explorations carried me to Jeff Zamek's blog. He is a ceramics consultant with a lot of technical expertise, but for me his greatest skill is in his ability to communicate information in strong, plain language. This book begins truly at the beginning--explaining how clay forms, how clay deposits are located and mined, processed and refined, and what all this means to me as a potter. What is a veritable river of clay flowing to industries far and wide becomes a tiny trickle of material by the time it gets to me. Currently I am reading and learning about all the different types of clay: Ball clay, Fireclay, Kaolin: where they come from, and how their physical properties impact the satiny block of potential I take out of the box. I have already learned so much, and am probably only 1/6th of the way into the book. The information is extensive, but the writing style is so accessible and understandable, that I can digest, understand and (most importantly) clearly remember and apply what I learn. This reads like a college textbook, not a coffee table book. There are lots of pictures but they are not glossy and over prettified. Shots of trucks hauling clay out of mines, giant industrial mixers, closeups of clay with various flaws and problems. All included to INFORM and not so much to simply entertain me. I am so grateful for the kindness of Mr. Zamek in sending me this book, and become ever more grateful with each page I read. Truly a must have for anyone who is serious about learning to become a better potter, and who may not have access to this information in any other way. ... show more
