Description

In this extraordinary graphic novel, author Peter J. Tomasi and illustrator Sara DuVall bring to life the construction of one of the most iconic landmarks in the world and shine a light on the incredible triumphs and tragedies that went into building the Brooklyn Bridge. After the accidental death of John Augustus Roebling in 1869, it was up to Roebling’s son Washington to complete the massive project. Unfortunately, there was more pain to follow, as Washington developed caisson disease, leaving him bedridden. Washington’s wife, Emily, deftly assumed a key role in the bridge’s construction by becoming her husband’s eyes and ears at the work site. As Washington’s wisest council, Emily skillfully navigated work crews who now had to answer to a woman, contractors, a hostile press, and a greedy city politician—all looking to take credit for the magnificent bridge slowly making its way across the East River. Through it all, the Roeblings persisted, rising above every obstacle to build the great bridge that connects Brooklyn and New York. Read more

  • Tomasi Writes Another Great Story
Peter Tomasi does it again with adding another dimension to a well-known established icon. Except this time is it a landmark that many tend to take for granted. By giving us the entire story behind the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, readers are apt to gain a new understanding and appreciation for the enormity of the task. Most surprising is how a supportive wife, Emily Roebling, stepped in and took on such an important role. Tomasi eloquently tells the story of a dedicate, loving partnership that made this New York icon possible. A must read for all those interested in historical monuments. ... show more

  • I found the writing boring, the art work inferior and the story line ...
Trying to catch up to my son and grandsons and develop an appreciation of the art form. Therefore, my review is that of a novice. I found the writing boring, the art work inferior and the story line superfluous and shallow. I wa interested in the characters and the actual construction of the bridge. While there was good development of the initial construction, the actual bridge construction was minimalistic as if the wither got two thirds of the way through and got tired of development. Seemingly the tower was constructed in one cell and the next the bridge was finished. I had planned to give this book to my family but won’t waste the postage. ... show more

  • Ordered for gift for Christmas
Both my husband and I read rapidly this pictorial book about the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. The book reads like a comic book but has been carefully researched and tells the story of building of the famous Brooklyn Bridge

  • For grades 6 to 8
The art work was engaging, particularly that which related to the bridge per se. The story as a whole was greatly simplified, and would be most suitable for grades 6-8. It's not really directed to the adult reader.
