Description

Nutritional health expert Natalie Savona improves on her 500,000-copy selling Big Book of Juices & Smoothies, with this even bigger book of recipes guaranteed to boost your health and vitality – a comprehensive introduction to juicing. The Big Book of Juices is a new edition of Natalie Savona's classic title, now with even more juices and smoothies and more than 250 photographs. It is founded on two basic principles. First, that juicing is easy if we simply adopt the habit of it; and second, that juicing every day is a delicious way to get healthy and stay healthy. Following a comprehensive introduction to juicing, 405 different juice and smoothie blends are divided up into three central chapters: Making Juices; Making Smoothies; and Making Quenchers (juices with a little added something, such as soda water, herbs or spices). Every blend is given an at-a-glance nutrient profile (listing vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients), and a star rating on its merits as an energy- and immune-booster, a detoxer, and a tonic for the skin. The recipes can be sourced in several ways: by fruit or vegetable of choice (the chapters are organized by main ingredient); by health benefit (an alphabetical chart lists approximately 50 common ailments or disorders, and cross-references them to the juices that will help overcome them); and by nutrient (a list is given of all the major vitamin and mineral nutrients, each with cross-references to the relevant recipes in the book). The last chapter – a juicing reference section – includes the nutrient and ailment charts as well as suggested juice courses for detoxing and immunity boosting, making this the most practical and comprehensive juice book on the market. • What an awesome book for anyone interested in juicing!!!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about juicing or just loves a great glass of fresh juice. The book is a pleasure to the eyes in that every page (excluding the great index) has wonderful pictures that draw you in to that particular recipe. The book also has recipes for specific ailments - many of which we commonly see these days. There is also a 5 star rating system on each recipe to rate for benefits to Energy, Detox, Immunity, Digestion, and Skin. Specific nutrients in each recipe are also listed (i.e., Beta-carotene, biotin, folic acid, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, etc.) There are recipes for fruit-based juices, vegetable-based juices, smoothies, quenchers, tea-based quenchers. Additionally, the author has included a section on juicing basics which discusses why to juice, the difference between juices and smoothies, the equipment you use, the ingredients, and healthy additives. This book has it all. It is about 700 pages of pure juicing joy! At the back of the book she has a nice list of nutrients (vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients and where they are found. There is an ailment cross-reference behind the nutrient list which points to the appropriate recipes for the specific ailment. She does a great job at this and I think readers will really find this book both helpful and healthful. The book is 728 pages. The recipes start on page 38 (after she gives you tips on getting the most from your juicing) and finish up on page 703. The index is 8 pages long so this book is set up well for anyone who want to juice - the beginner to the expert. The recipes are great. I really think you will enjoy this book if you purchase it. Just an aside - I ordered the book when I ordered a juicer from Amazon. The juicer arrived in a matter of a couple of days but the book had been back-ordered and I received it approximately 5-6 weeks later (with 2 day delivery,) and I have to believe it was because of its popularity. The price is right at just below $17.00. I hope you enjoy it just as much as I am enjoying it. ... show more

  • Fantastic Juices!
This book is fantastic. Includes an incredible selection of juices and smoothies, and almost all of them utilize easy to find ingredients that you can find at your local grocery store. It also explains the different tastes and qualities of individual fruits and vegetables, so that you can begin to experiment with making your own juices. She also explains the use of different juicers, so that a novice juicer can make a well informed decision for their budget and needs. One attribute that I really enjoy is that each of the juices only uses perhaps 3 to 5 ingredients, so you don't have to break the bank to have a revitalizing cup of juice. The book is divided into easy to use sections, and the back of the book has a wonderful index that recommends specific juices for whatever particular ailment or issue that you may be experiencing. It is easy to read, fun, and full of wonderful color pictures. One thing that you may want to be aware of, is that some of the juices look ugly and brown when you make them, but despite the appearance they taste amazing! Usually the author will give you a heads up to let you know that you are going to have an ugly juice. My three-year-old has truly been enjoying sharing a fresh cup of juice with me every morning. I love knowing that he is getting so many nutrients, enzymes, bioflavanoids, etc. My husband, who is not used to juicing, or the taste of vegetables has been surprised to find how palatable the vegetable juices are when the right ingredients are combined. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in juicing! ... show more

  • Not Bad, But Could Be Better
Personally, I will get a lot of inspiration from this book, because there are some combinations of produce that I never would have thought to use. Pros: There 405 recipes. You can make one a day, and after a year, you will still have something different, even if only slightly different, to look forward to. There is a list of fruits and vegetables at the beginning of the book which informs you the benefits of each. Each recipe is rated for its positive effects, such as energy, detox, immunity, digestion, and skin. There is an index, so if you are looking for a specific thing to juice, you can easily find it, rather than having to skim through all 700 plus pages. The photography is beautiful. Cons: Horrible horrible layout. They make one recipe per page, and when recipes consist of 1-6 ingredients, this is a complete waste of paper. Who can justify a whole page to 1 piece of produce such as "4 peaches"? Tree huggers will literally cry if they get their hands on this. It would have been far more practical to do a minimum of 2 recipes per page, as well as making the size of the pages taller to reduce its thickness. MY BOTTOM LINE is, if you're new to juicing, this can be hit or miss. While the book gives a lot of great recipes, it does NOT give the specific amounts in weight that some people want. But if you're okay with a recipe that is somewhat vague, such as "1 bunch of basil", and you think, how much is "1 bunch of basil", then you'll be comfortable with this. ... show more
