  • GREAT
I recently had the pleasure of diving into "The Bare Bones Camera Course for Film and Video," and I must say, it's an absolute gem for anyone interested in learning the ins and outs of cinematography! First and foremost, let's talk about the content. This book covers everything you need to know about camera operation, from the basics of exposure and composition to more advanced techniques like lighting and camera movement. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned filmmaker looking to brush up on your skills, there's something for everyone in this comprehensive guide. What sets this book apart is its clear and concise explanations. Author Tom Schroeppel has a knack for breaking down complex concepts into easy-to-understand language, making it accessible to readers of all skill levels. The step-by-step instructions and practical exercises ensure that you not only understand the theory but also know how to apply it in real-world situations. I also appreciate the hands-on approach of this book. Instead of just bombarding you with technical jargon, Schroeppel encourages you to get out there and start shooting. The exercises are designed to help you hone your skills and develop your creative eye, whether you're shooting with a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or even a smartphone. Another highlight of this book is its emphasis on storytelling. Schroeppel understands that great cinematography is about more than just technical prowess – it's about using the camera as a tool to tell compelling stories. Whether you're shooting a narrative film, a documentary, or a corporate video, the principles outlined in this book will help you craft visually engaging and emotionally resonant imagery. Overall, "The Bare Bones Camera Course for Film and Video" is a must-have resource for anyone serious about mastering the art of cinematography. It's informative, engaging, and packed with practical advice that will take your filmmaking skills to the next level. If you're passionate about telling stories through moving images, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book – you won't be disappointed! ... show more

  • Bought for Class
I needed this book for class. I kept it because the videography resources are beyond helpful. If you’re a person who can’t just read about a subject to learn it, grab this book to guide you through a hands-on experience. Consider it like a field guide.

  • Fantastic Overview
Love this book. It does help that I've been doing some of this for a while, but love how simple & straightforward everything is laid out. Fun illustrations. Good first-time shoot book. Overall, impressed with how economically & clear the basics for a film shoot are laid out.

  • Woah learning so much.
I’ve only just finished the first chapter but I’m learning so much and I love the easy to understand visuals because I’m a visual learner. My college doesn’t have a film camera so it’s nice to at least get to read how to use one.

  • Very informative about positioning to take better pictures
It had some useful information but I expected more information about how to adjust the settings on the camera to take the perfect shot without doing a lot of editing on the photo. It gave information about lighting and positioning but I was expecting more about the camera itself.
