  • A great, if expensive, package
I can see that a lot of folks are upset over the pricing and spacing out of the young Indy saga and it is undeniable that obtaining the complete young Indy saga on DVD is going to be a not inexpensive proposition. That said, if you can afford it or are inclined to save your money to get it, I think this is an impressive endeavor. I do wish they had given us the introductions with old Indy and the great main title music on the movies, and the really young Indy episodes, which occupy a good portion of Volume 1, are, for me the weakest episodes (he's a little too precocious--one wonders how he keeps getting away with his escapades, his parents aren't paying much attention, but I guess if he didn't there wouldn't be any stories to tell) but it's a good start to the tale and the interaction with the various historical figures is a lot of fun (including seeing some character actors whose faces stir your memory from other things you've seen--Major League and I, Claudius to mention a couple). The movies are certainly worth the time spent. The really impressive parts for me are the extra features on the historical background. Entertaining and a painless way to flesh out the stories and learn a bit at the same time, sometimes about things that are fairly obscure, sometimes about things that you are superficially aware of but have never known much detail about. I think when you put it all together it is a pretty good package and well worth the price. I look forward to the next two volumes. ... show more

  • 'Before the world discovered Indiana Jones, Indiana discovered the world'
Back in the early 1990's, ABC ran a program called The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. The idea was to follow Indy from a boy of about 8 up to the point we see him in the films. While the series was incredible in terms of production values, writing and acting, it ran into a few problems. While Indy does have adventures, they are typically not the search for lost treasure type. The series came under attack for violence, particularly in the WWI episodes, and bounced around in terms of time frame. Only 44 episodes were made before the series was canceled. These were later re-edited into 22 movie length features we have today. This first set in the collection follows the younger Indy as his father Henry Jones Sr. goes on a world speaking tour along with his mother Anna and governess Miss Seymour. Along the way, he meets various historical folk, T.E. Lawrence, Teddy Roosevelt, Picasso, and has a variety of adventures. Later, as a teen, Indy meets Edison and then heads into Mexico where he hooks up with Pancho Villa, and will later get swept up into WWI. Again, there is some great stories, acting and cinematography here, literally shot around the world with various directors and writers. I'd have to say my favorite two were Travels With Father, in which Indy and his dad go out on their own adventure and we get a crash course in philosophy, and Journey of Radiance in which Indy meets Jiddu Krishnamurti, and gets a bit of a lesson about religions. The DVD set has well done documentaries for the key people and events Indy encounters, so you are not only getting some great entertainment, but some education as well. Well worth a view for the price and recommended whether you are an Indiana Jones fan or just want a darn good series. ... show more

  • Excellent, Interesting, Educational, Affordable!
As a UCLA graduate in history, I eagerly watched "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" when it appeared as a TV series in the early 1990s, and thought it so well done that I submitted a positive letter to TV GUIDE that they chose to publish. As a parent of young children in the late 1990s, I invested in the series when it became available as a 12-videotape set, and it paid off with my children through the years developing a compassionate, comprehensive understanding of World War I era history. We have looked forward to all 22 adventures being available and affordable in DVD form--and that time is NOW with volumes 1, 2, and 3 at discounted Amazon prices! My children, husband, and I have loved seeing the adventures we missed, and have been enriched by the many documentaries spread out through all 3 volumes on related topics, such as the development of espionage and air warfare during WWI. None of the documentaries go longer than 30 minutes, so that's the perfect length for the high-school history class, they're accompanied by stirring Indiana Jones music, and they're the first documentaries my kids say are interesting and not boring! My daughter's history teacher is planning to use some of the documentaries to help his students learn from history and not repeat its mistakes. Don't miss your opportunity--courtesy of Mr. George Lucas and Amazon--to do the same! ... show more
