    • Phenoxyethanol is not as scary as it sounds. This stuff works great.

I bought this as a toner for my skin after I wash my face, to help balance out moisture and keep my skin from drying out. There's a lot in this bottle; I don't need much on a cotton ball to cover my face, so I know it'll last me a long time. Plus, it smells lovely! So win-win! Many other reviews have complained about phenoxyethanol in the ingredient list, and I can't speak for whether the ingredients changed or not over the years as this is my first time buying it. What I can say is that phenoxyethanol actually has many names it goes by, like dowanol or rose-ether among many, so it's entirely possible it has always been in this toner, and when the label was reprinted for newer bottles, they changed the way they listed the ingredients to its scientific name. Adding to this theory is the fact that phenoxyethanol/rose-ether is known for smelling like roses, and it's likely where this product gets its rosy scent. If they DID change their recipe to suddenly start including it when they didn't before, it's worth noting that phenoxyethanol is used in many cosmetics, even soaps and vaccines, as an antibacterial preservative to keep the product from spoiling. Many companies switched to using it because consumers began to vocally dissent to parabens, which is another widely used preservative. Other people have said in their reviews that phenoxyethanol is toxic when absorbed through the skin, and this is true.... but only in high amounts. The FDA, the American Cosmetic Safety Review both deemed it perfectly safe to apply topically, like in, say, a facial toner, so long as the concentration is 1% or lower. If that's not enough for you, the European Commission on Health and Food Safety deemed the same, and Japan also has similar restrictions. People in the reviews having reactions to their skin isn't necessarily from this toner. I've had reactions to creams I've used for years for eczema, sometimes the body changes, and something that worked for you doesn't anymore. Sometimes its external, and something changed in your environment that triggered the reaction. There's many reasons skin can act up, but that doesn't mean that a common preservative used worldwide in a variety of products is somehow to blame. In conclusion, phenoxyethanol sounds like a scary word, but has probably always been used in some form to give this product its scent. Sometimes products work for people, and sometimes they don't. Many people in the reviews said that they stopped buying this product because it stopped working well for them, but that doesn't mean the product itself is suddenly bad. It works well for me and many others. If the presence of phenoxyethanol deters you from this product, make sure to avoid any toner or product in general that has ethylene glycol monophenyl ether, 2-Phenoxyethanol, PhE, dowanol, arosol, phenoxetol, Rose ether, phenoxyethyl alcohol, beta-hydroxyethyl phenyl ether, or euxyl K® 400-- because all of them are literally also scary words for the exact same thing. ... show more

They changed the formula! I used the face toner on the left over the past 6 months and I have loved it. I re-ordered it, it had the same description and label. I just used it and it burned and made my face red!! I look at the back and the ingredients are different! It now has phenoxyethanol in it!!

This was my favorite toner, but not anymore. they change the ingredients without warning. they added phenoxyethanol and aloe vera is no longer 2nd on the list. This change gave me a drier skin. I ordered three bottles, but if I saw this on time, I would have ask for a refund.

I have had very deep, cystic acne on the sides of my face/jaw for almost 4 years. It was adult onset and came out of nowhere. My husband had begun telling me he was not attracted to me, it was so bad. He missed the clear skin I had at 18 when I met him. I was heartbroken and needed something that would FINALLY clear my skin. (Doctors and various medicines, lotions, essential oils, supplements, extracts & pills hadn't worked.) I was literally having little balls of soft wax, like soy candle wax, pushing to the surface of my skin from somewhere so deep it felt as if it came from my bones. These were NOT normal zits. They were something from the pit of hell. One reviewer who had symptoms similar to mine said to use Ole Henricksen African Red Tea foaming face wash plus Thayers Rose Petal Witch Hazel. I am SO INCREDIBLY GLAD I took her advice! Here is what I did to clear my face miraculously in 3 weeks: While in the shower where the steam has opened my pores, I use original apricot scrub gently on my face (my skin needs a little help exfoliating or my pores clog). I rinse and then immediately (while still in the shower) wash my face, neck and chest with two pumps of Ole Henricksen African Red Tea foaming cleanser. I leave the foam on my skin for about 30 seconds and then rinse. Once I am out of the shower and dried off, I put the Thayers Rose Petal Witch Hazel on a cotton ball and use it as an astringent all over my face. Sometimes I drench another cotton ball and go over problem areas. If I have some zit boil that starts to rise up, I dab on therapeutic grade tea tree/melaleuca essential oil to help calm down the area. I bought the Ole Henricksen and Thayers Witch Hazel and began using them the day before Halloween 2017. By Thanksgiving 3 and a half weeks later, my skin had cleared. No more deep, painful boils from hell bubbling up, no more huge red cyst things, no open boo-boos - ALL CLEAR SKIN. This has not happened in 4 years. My husband began complementing my skin shortly before our Thanksgiving trip when it began to clear up. (I used these products for about two weeks and actually had more cysts come to the surface before it all cleared but I knew to expect that. Keep using it! The clear skin happens quite rapidly once the last cysts surface!) I am soooooo grateful for this product. I plan to always keep a brand new bottle on-hand so I don't run out. It feels so good to not be embarrassed about my skin any more! ... show more
