  • Worked flawlessly
I wanted to re-wire new batteries to the bow thruster and windlass on our sailing boat. Getting an electrician to show up and do everything was going to be tricky and, in the end, proved impossible. However, I purchased this crimper tool in advance and it allowed me to do all the connections on the marine grade cables, from AWG 6 through 1/0 without a problem. I did borrow the industrial shipyard vise to help me push the crimper (along with a hefty pipe I found on the floor for extra torque); but this tool did everything with ease. I lost count of all the connections, easily over 15 with cables of all sizes and high quality (thick) copper connectors. It's a big recommendation from me. ... show more

  • Great crimper - excellent value
I bought this to crimp lugs on 6 and 8 awg wire for an rv solar project. It is recommended by Will Prowse on his solar website. Worked great and costs much less than other types of crimpers. Also, it’s small and fits in my electrical toolbox, where most other types of crimpers would need their own bag or carrying case. Dead simple to use and makes a solid crimp - just use the heaviest hammer you have and set on a solid surface. ... show more

  • RV wiring upgrade. Great little tool! Works perfect!!
Bought this to make my own cables for an RV wiring upgrade. Worth every penny. It's smaller than you'd expect, but quite tough. I've made multiple cables using 4/0 welding wire, 2 awg welding wire, 1awg thhn and 6 awg stranded wire. This crimper handled them all perfectly. Pro tips: Use good copper lugs appropriate for the gauge wire you're crimping. Find a firm surface, concrete or steel will do. Use a small sledge, 2-4 lbs, but one that you can still operate comfortably with one hand. Hold the lug snug to the wire with one hand and hammer with the other hand, at least for the first tap or two. Start with a decent tap, just to seat the crimper in the lug so when you whack it with the next strikes it won't slip. 4-5 good whacks (for 4/0, less for small wire), you'll hear the sound change as you compact that wire and turn it into essentially solid metal at the crimp. When that sound changes, you're crimped! No adjustments needed between different wire sizes, it's self adjusting. I also added solder to my connections. I found this worked best: flux the copper wire and the inside of the lug beforehand, then crimp as described, then heat it up and add solder (some of my larger lugs had no holes in the lug, other than the big one the wire goes in, so I drilled a 1/8" or so hole in the lug to add the solder thru. Worked great, but honestly, you don't even need to solder these connections. The crimper makes them that strong! Recommend heat shrink wrap, the good thick kind with glue inside. Strengthens the connections, makes it waterproof and looks professional ... show more

  • Excellent but one minor weakness .............
This unit makes excellent crimps. I've used it on lugs from #8 up through 1/0. It has just one minor weakness. On mine, the stamp unit fits a bit loose in its sleeve and the crimp end ("shoe") wants to land off-center on the lug (even on 1/0 lugs). This is easy to prevent by holding the stamp unit inward just under the sleeve to center it over the lug as you land the hits with your 3lb sledge. This is equally important on large and small lugs. I tried to modify the crimper to correct the above problem by hitting the sleeve a couple of times with my 3lb sledge to narrow it and remove some of the play but it would not budge. The steel is so hard that I was afraid it might fracture rather than bend inward. Given that one hand needs to hold the stamp unit centered over the lug while the other hand handles the hammer, it's best if you have a second pair of hands to hold the wire firmly into the lug and keep the lug in place during the 3-4 taps needed. I found it interesting that you can hear when the crimp is complete as you hammer the stamp unit down. The first couple of hits make a softer sound and feel (on the hammer handle) as the lug sleeve compresses. On the 3rd or 4th hit (depending on how hard you hit) there will be no more give to the lug sleeve and it's like landing the hammer on an anvil rather than on a soft copper tube. You definitely feel and hear know when there is no more compression to be had. ... show more

  • GOOD TOOL
Worked well. Took a while to figure out how to use it effectively but it works. You have to be careful placing the crimp or you will be wasting them.
