Description

Double LP in Gatefold sleeve. Includes download code. Taking a page from Pavement, Beck, Guided by Voices, and Dinosaur Jr, Car Seat Headrest's Teens of Denial LP is a raw, melodic, and at times, raucous summer rock album. Songwriter Will Toledo doesn't shy away from topics like depression and drugs, speaking intimately to the listener one moment before crescendoing into a punk rock shouting style chorus the next. Theres a lo-fi, DIY aesthetic to the album, but the sound is full and heavy, punctuated with the sudden appearance of a small brass section, swirling psych guitars, and Toledo's insistent scream. The cathartic nature of Teens of Denial sneaks up on you; the songs are an exercise in sustained tension, often detouring into unexpected genre territory. It's a wonderful showcase for Toledo's arresting, insistent songwriting.

  • This is my favorite album of 2016.
This was my introduction to CSH and it's good to the point that I almost dread whatever they do next as I feel I will always compare it to this masterpiece. I listen to most music produced from the 50's to today, most genres, from Metal to Folk and everything in between. I was drawn in by fill in the blank that I saw performed on the Late Show and was blown away. After weeks of listening to this cover to cover, I have to say thats not even the best and I've actually tired of it. Like a lot of great albums, the songs you skip over end up being the best when you give them a chance. Joe gets kicked out of school is definitely among my favorite songs ever by any band. The Ballad of the Costa Concordia I skipped a lot in the early days but now I put it up as loud as I can. I feel I could review every song on here and explain its greatness individually but you really just need to give this album a chance. If you like one song, you will like 75% or more of this album. Connect the Dot's is my least favorite, but it's growing on me. ... show more

  • Great album to listen to all the way through
I love it so much in like the 2nd song when it builds up and he says, "Sometimes I just feel like going home / and sometimes I feel like THIS!!!" and the music breaks apart into feedback over a drumbeat and it punches you in the belly and you understand exactly, exactly, EXACTLY what he means. Good catchy songs, a little garage but this just expresses youth and bein ALIVE. Lyrics are so good I've actually looked them up sometimes. ... show more

  • Self-Referential Old Soul in Young Body Rocker World
It's not that it's aiming to be not inclusive, it's just not trying to speak to mainstream by adapting to any mass palatable trends. Instead, there's lots of love for rock for rock's sake, grunge ideals, slurring and mumbling of words, poetry of defeatist seeming philosophy, and youth is squandered on the young feels. In other words, irrepressible originality and unapologetically so. ... show more

  • This is an excellent album, and the vinyl is superb.
Have been listening to CSH for a few years now, and this is my first vinyl record I've purchased of them. The mixing for this was really wonderfully done, and it comes across full and beautiful. Will definitely purchase the rest of their catalogue. Artwork, design all 5 star.

  • Beautiful cover design throughout, and best album of 2016 to boot.
I have just recently discovered Car Seat Headrest and this album is already among my all time favorites. Will Toledo knows how to make an 11 minute bereavement ballad feel like a 3 minute pop hit. In a good way, of course.

  • Kind of pointless to review
I bought the album knowing what I would get into. Kind of pointless to review albums in 2019 tbh, if you're here you should buy it. If you haven't listened, do that first.

  • Something New That Takes Me Back
Music being so subjective.... Reminds me of what I felt like when I was young and discovered Pixies Come On Pilgrim / Surfer Rosa

  • Solid pressing
Solid pressing of an album that I normally wouldn't have paid any mind to just because of the genre of music. The songwriting is so damn catchy and relatable though, it's hard not to like this album. I'm very excited to hear what these guys come out with next.
