  • Excellent
Perfect to use to propagate my houseplants!

  • Beat cloning gel I have found.
Best cloning gel I have found. I have tried several of the other major brand cloning products and Techanaflora has provided the best and most consistent results of all. While there are several variables that will determine successful results with cloning, the concentration of growth hormones in this product is the highest of all similar products I have found is and has given me the quickest and most dense rooting of any others I have tried. ... show more

  • **UPDATED** Like Mom Nature In A Jar
Originally Titled: What Happened To The Clean, Clear, Thick, Orange Gel That Worked? I felt more like a real gardener when I could start new plants from cuttings using Rootech Gel. At our old home it's the way I cheaply expanded the landscaping and grew plants for gift giving. That was years ago. In our new place, we made plans to put in low maintenance beds to replace grassy areas with ground cover and flowering bushes. Five weeks ago, in prep of growing our own plants from cuttings instead of buying them, I ordered this Technaflora TFRTG56G 56-Gram Technaflora Rootech Gel for Plants. Friday I prepared a little cloning environment, a domed tray filled with plugs that were soaked and ready to receive cuttings, and let it sit on a heating pad on the lowest setting for a day to make a miniature jungle. Sunday afternoon I took my cuttings from the selected plants and trimmed up the stems, leaves, etc for rooting. When I opened my Rootech Gel for the first time I immediately saw it is completely different from what I used to use (approx 2001-09). Instead of clean, clear, bright, thick, orange gel, this stuff is watery, more brown than orange, and has flecks of different size matter floating in it. The whole appeal of the stuff when I used it was its ability to glob on to the stem and hold while being inserted into the medium; that doesn't happen now, it just pours off with no hold. Plus, it smells, well, off, organic I guess, but like poo, not clean. This morning, all my cuttings are limp and bent over, obviously not taking root, but dead. No idea why a proven winner would change formulas, but I won't buy this new, NOT improved stuff again. ***UPDATED*** At the nursery, in the check out, I spot that the guy in front of me is holding a jar of Technaflora Rootech Gel. I asked, have you used that stuff before? He "swears by it" he tells me. I tell him what happened with my last jar. Right there in line, he pops off the lid and we look in to see Clean, Clear, Thick, Orange Gel! Right away I go to get a jar, but it's 30% more than I paid on Amazon, so I put it back and ordered another when I got home. The original jar, the poo jar? Long gone. Plus, I'm outside of the return window anyway. I'm eating the cost and know for next time, IMMEDIATELY initiate a return if it isn't Clean, Clear, Thick, Orange Gel. The new jar? Used it a week ago today on a dozen cuttings (same plant). This morning, 10 of 12 are showing roots. Like Mom Nature in a jar. ... show more

Very good roots

  • Won't use anything else ever again
I've used powder for years. The wet soaks and powdery cuts are OVER! the powder stuck on the end and preventing root growth and the excessive percentages hindering leaf production...this is all over. I had not one single problem with this. It worked on hardwoods, softwoods, succulents, vines, cactus, cereus orchids...I am testing it on a phalenopsis orchid that might be dead but I think this stuff will let me make a clone from the leaf. Every other experiment with this stuff was a success...now for the big question...Can it work Magic? I think it can. You have to try it. You'll throw away all the hormone powder in your house though. ... show more

  • Works but needs to be thicker
Works but needs to be thicker, If your using it in constant spray water clone machine. Because it just falls off or doesn't work well enough.

  • Check the Ingredients (plus tips for success)
I have tried several rooting gels, and I have looked into the main ingredient, indole butyric acid. Pay attention to the percentage, as this is the most important component. Don't let any of the marketing hype or word of mouth fool you. Just because someone says "x-brand worked better for me, but all of the clones used by rootech failed", it doesn't mean that the other brand was better. It also doesn't mean Rootech was necessarily better or worse. They could have done something different or made a mistake, just as I did. Now, back to that main ingredient. The more of this stuff, the better. The rest is just filler or water, and sometimes vitamins, which really don't do much at all for a plant without roots. From what I've found, Rootech has the highest concentration of indole butyric acid of any other product. This is the growth hormone that encourages your cuttings to grow roots, so more is better. One other product, which ends in an "-ex", even contains a known CARCINOGEN AND IRRITANT called crystal violet dye, which is only used as a colorant. (Check the MSDS safety sheets!) I did not know this even though I have used that particular brand of clone solution before trying the cloning gels. That said, just use whatever method and product works best for you. At least now you know what to look for. And if you want to go with the facts, this product has the highest concentration of rooting hormones among any other gels. EDIT: Just a note to anyone who has had trouble cloning in the past. I started out knowing nothing about taking cuttings and to make them survive. Believe it or not the cloning gel you use is not the most important factor in survival rate. I started with maybe 50% survival if I was lucky. By elimination, I figured out what conditions made for the best survival rates. The biggest things that will kill your clones are: 1) Stem rot from too much moisture (bacteria) 2) Wilting from low humidity 3) Yellowing (too much light) Here are some observations that might help: 1) To prevent stem rot, make sure your stems aren't too wet. If using root cubes or plugs squeeze out excess moisture and only keep them moist. Too much water makes for less oxygen and sets up the perfect environment for bacteria to rot away the stems and prevent root growth. Aeroponic cloners can help with this, but can still rot your stems if the water gets too warm. 2) A clone has no roots so can't absorb water easily, so it will wilt. A common solution is using a humidity dome and misting. This can actually cause your clones to yellow faster and set up the perfect environment for mold and bacteria. Wilting can be easily prevented with the use of some anti-wilt liquid. It's a simple wax that is biodegradable and prevents water loss through the leaves. It will not kill your plants and will make them last longer, which means higher survival rates. I've used a couple brands and vitagrow seems to work the best. I just mix it according to directions and dip the cuttings or spray them once. I still use a humidity dome to prevent my root plugs from drying out. I promise you will increase your survival rate if you try this. I went from 50% to 100% by this method alone. 3) Yellowing. This is minor problem, but still important because you want only the strongest cuttings. To prevent this you should use low lighting for clones. High lighting will cause them to lose water faster, and in turn they will burn up the small reserve of nutrients in their leaves. A cutting that has yellowed and dying leaves will take longer to regenerate and may not survive as well. Another thing that can cause yellowing is the overuse of foliar sprays and even plain water. If you use ant wilt sprays there is no need for water misting, and nutrient foliar sprays are just too much for a small cutting that has already been in shock. I hope this has helped anyone who is having trouble. ... show more
