Frequently asked questions

To start the TaoTao ATM50-A1, first ensure the scooter is on a stable, level surface. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the 'on' position, ensuring the kill switch is in the 'run' position. For cold starts, use the choke if necessary. Kickstart the scooter or use the electric start button. Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes before riding.

Licensing requirements vary by state and country. In many places, scooters with an engine size of 50cc, like the TaoTao ATM50-A1, may only require a basic driver's license or a moped permit. Always check local laws to ensure compliance with all licensing, registration, and insurance requirements.

Regular maintenance for your TaoTao ATM50-A1 includes checking and topping up fluids, inspecting tires for proper inflation and wear, checking and replacing air filters as needed, and performing engine oil changes at recommended intervals. Regular brake checks and adjustments are also crucial for safety. Consult the owner's manual for a detailed maintenance schedule.

The trunk included with the TaoTao ATM50-A1 scooter provides a secure, lockable space for storing personal items while riding. It's suitable for smaller items such as a helmet, gloves, a raincoat, or daily essentials. It's important not to overload the trunk and to ensure that any items inside do not interfere with riding stability and safety.

Should I Buy It?

If you're comfortable with performing some initial maintenance and possibly waiting on replacement parts, this scooter seems to offer good value and performance for its price. It may be a particularly good fit for those who enjoy tinkering. However, if you're seeking a ride with no assembly or mechanical work needed, you might want to consider other options.

  • So far so good. I have had this scooter for two weeks
So far so good. I have had this scooter for two weeks. Assembly was easy. Manual is a CD-ROM, which is good enough. If you don't have it, you can look up an assembly video online. Listening to other websites and suggestions, I replaced the engine oil and gave it a thorough inspection. The handle bars were slightly loose, but tightening the nut fixed that problem. The throttle also required adjustment, as it idled so low the engine would shut off without some throttle, but that was a single screw that was so easy I should have touched the Staples Easy button. Basically, I will post again if I get any issues. None thus far. The battery does come de-energized. If you do not own a charger, you can take it to Autozone or a similar place, and they will charge it overnight. Assembly takes roughly two hours. EDIT: I have owned this scooter for a year and only put 3000 kilometers on it with city driving. However, it has had very few problems. I had to change the basic computer (CDI), and that part cost only $15 bucks. The only drawback is that it took 3 weeks to receive in the mail from China. When it worked, I ordered another one for my bench stock. Everything else is original parts. Oh, another drawback is the lack of service. If you buy it be prepared to fix it. On the flipside, working on a scooter is easy, even for a tinkering mechanic like myself. I would discourage those who have zero skills, but even they can assemble and change the small things. The CDI was a connected and three screws. Bottom line, for a $750 vehicle, it has been worth every penny. ... show more

  • Everything is fine until you have a problem
The scooter was easy to put together and it started up right away. The left brake lever was broken during shipping. I am now 2 weeks out from an email to customer service and no one is helping to resolve the problem. Customer service at the seller said they would notify the manufacturer. The manufacturer: Tao Tao does not respond. I would have given 5 stars, but I seem to be going nowhere in getting a new replacement brake lever. ... show more

  • So far a great little scooter!
So far, the scooter runs great and I didn't have any issues ie missing parts, malfunctions, problems, deliver. It came within a week of ordering it. There are a few things you need to know that I didn't that would have been helpful. 1) The color in the pictures is not the one you are going to get. In fact, none of the colors in this listing are even available. I feel like they should update it with the colors they do have. I bought it for the white scooter with decals and ended up with a red scooter, which is a beautiful color so not complaining too much. 2) The battery does not come charged or even assembled. It requires a special 1amp charger. PURCHASE A 1AMP CHARGER BEFORE YOU RECEIVE SCOOTER. Its not something you will be able to find at auto store for a decent price and the auto stores do not have chargers for it on hand to charge it for you. So do yourself a favor and buy one here on Amazon for $15. Or, be prepared to buy a charged battery at auto store for $40 with a $30 disposal fee. 3) When you put together the scooter, make sure to check all screws, brakes, oil, anything that could have come loose. It will save you from starting scooter and potentially breaking it. Take your time and don't rush to start it up. I did a full inspection, changed oil (use premium 10w-30 nonsynthetic) and changed gear oil (use premium gear oil). It was simple and fast to do. Worth a few extra minutes. 4) Once you start up the scooter, pay attention to the idle. Mine was revved a little high and the scooter moved on its own. I quick little turn of the screw fixed it in a pinch. 5) To start the scooter, you have to hold down the break when you push the button. Manual does not state this. 6)You have to email seller with VIN number once it arrives to get the title. ... show more

  • In the long run...
Do yourself a favour and go buy a real scooter AKA a Japanese one. The Chinese scooters are cool & great at first ( maybe a year or so) but then you realize after a while how cheap and low quality they are. Look at your local CL or app like 5 MILES or OFFER UP they are flooded with em'. All the cheap low-quality bolts and crappy materials they use to construct these must be replaced. Horror Stories are common. Just think about it, would you go buy a car or truck that you need to change out parts right after purchase. Imagine doing that to a new F150 or Camry, you wouldn't buy it. So why buy a motorcycle or scooter like this. Your life is depending on it. Don't forget the resale value & build quality is horrible. Just do some independent research on these kinds of scooters. Your GONNA LEARN BASIC MECHANIC SKILLS or pay someone an arm and a leg to repair it. In the long run, you will be much better off (money & fun-wise) with any HONDA ( Elite, Spree, Ruckus or Grom, YAMAHA (Zuma), or KAWASAKI (Z125) scooter. YES, the Japanese scooters cost more but low cost used scooters are available if you take the time to look and are not afraid to turn some wrenches. Any scooter or motorcycle requires basic maintenance skills to keep it going properly and safely. People buy these Chinese Scoots thinking they are getting a cool toy or a cheap on gas method of transportation and they are really getting a big headache. ... show more
