Assembly is simple and straightforward: Each side of the metal frame is an “A” or inverted “U” shape at top, with the legs being a series of metal bars that fit together and tighten with a screw. The shelves screw in from the side with two screws per side, with each fitting through a hole in one of the four legs. The rear bracing bars actually are four flat metal pieces attached together at one end that swing/fold out into the “X” shape and attach at the opposite end via one screw per each leg. (I am unsure how much additional support this really adds, as it is not an especially strong cross-bracing method.) The side bars for each shelf have spring-pins on each end that insert into holes on the legs after the main structure is assembled. Note that these are not adjustable, as each shelf has only one set of pre-drilled holes. At the bottom of each leg is a threaded adjustable foot, which is a typical plastic screwcap. It seems to be of average construction. Be careful when tightening the screws, especially those that hold the legs together. Do not use a power screwdriver of any sort unless it has very low torque, preferably adjustable, and variable speed. Stop tightening the screws *immediately* once they are fully flush against the metal and grip tightly. Extra turns will lead them to pop the threading and become loose. As best I can tell, this is due to weak metal used for the legs, as once it occurred there was no change by swapping screws. The metal on the legs also will indent if the screws are over-tightened. For the price, I feel the quality is slightly above average. The assembled shelves are sturdy enough for downwards weight, and the adjustable feet are sufficient for leveling purposes. I strongly caution against skipping installation of the wall attachments, especially for the taller versions of this item, as it would tip fairly easily if the weight on it is not distributed well or something/someone were to bump into it. The shelf boards are MDF with a laminate surface that resembles wood grain. They look like what they are; nobody will be fooled into believing these are wood. Set your expectations accordingly and you won’t be disappointed. As you can see in the photos I uploaded, the shelves look better in higher-light settings. When the room is dimly lit, or the shelves have focused lighting, the environment emphasizes that the shelves are not real wood. ... show more

I love this shelf. It was easy to put together & only took maybe 15 minutes. Most shelves are short & wide, but this one is a little more than a foot wide & stands about level with me & I'm 5'10. It also coincidentally matches the nightstands I just got, which is perfect. I will say it's very light & if you have small children, please anchor it to the wall because it will easily fall if a little one pulls on it or tries to climb on it. I mean I don't trust it to stay standing if my cat jumps on it so we anchored it just to be safe. This is something the maker anticipates though & thus they did include anchor straps. I'm sure the ones they included will suffice but my boyfriend didn't want it to have any give so he took 2 metal brackets & anchored it that way. Alot of furniture these days needs to be anchored so it wasn't a negative thing though. Overall this is a great shelf that doesn't take up much floor space & with its 5 shelves still offers plenty of space to put things. I may just purchase another one. This is an easy to assemble shelving unit - taking only 30 minutes to all the way from unboxing to assembled. It has adjustable feet making it a nice fit in even older homes that don't have level floors. It does include a wall strap, but I didn't use it, as I only have a few small items on it. The look and overall style of this shelf is great, easily one of my favorites. You do have to put it together, but it's not terrible and the end product is definitely worth it. I'm actually considering a second one to make it a pair.

This ladder bookshelf was easy to assemble and comes with all of the tools required. The wood shelves feel sturdier than I expected them to be and I feel confident in the shelves' ability to hold my items. The side bars however do not feel sturdy at all. As I was assembling the bookshelf the side pieces did not want to stay in place and still wiggle around easily after the assembly is done.
