  • I use it for simple functionality upgrade
Color: Black
I did not realize this was part of a bigger "smart home" setup. I don't do Alexa or anything you have to talk to (or anything that causes more ads). I do only very highly specialized and professional smart home stuff. But I saw this as an IR blaster and use it as that; it works great! I have a whole-house, wired audio system that is not "smart" in an annoying wireless sense, but it is very rock solid, being wired and controlled by classic hardware. But I can do everything via my phone via supplemental apps (i.e., the apps don't sell the system or hold the system hostage to forced obsolescence, but they do add some great functionality). The one thing I couldn't control via app is my SiriusXM unit with homekit. With this IR blaster, I just added the buttons from that remote that I wanted to use, so now I can turn the power on and off and change around to/from my favorite channels, which is perfect since that's all that was holding my system back from being pretty much flawless. So far, it seems like it's always online and it doesn't take much time to reconnect or anything like that. And it tells you if the command couldn't be sent for some reason. I was very surprised how easy it was to get line-of-sight with this thing. No problem with placement whatsoever. It needs less aim than the original remote. I also added my TV since they're in the same vicinity. That way, if the remote is every on the other side of the couch, I can be really lazy if I want to be. I then realized that you can add a bunch of commands in series with spaces in between, and I guess you can use bluetooth remotes as well, so conceivably, I could turn on my stereo, TV, and playstation, and even set everything up to the right inputs and all that with just one button press, to get it set up while I'm heating water for tea... ....BUT (and I just took off a star when I remembered this), I can't get the widget thing to work on iPhone. It says something about having to turn on cloud services to use the widget. That doesn't even make sense to me. I'm not about to use some BS cloud thing to run something that I only need completely locally. So clearly, the app has some ways to go. I mean, I like the idea of all this stuff if it works well, but I don't imagine ever doing up a whole house in this stuff...but I already told you my opinion on that. I'll tell you...while I hate proprietary stuff, I hate spotty wifi stuff even more, so if I add a wifi device, it's just for fun - never anything critical. Everything else needs to be wired or be a closed system (like Caseta Wireless, where I'll accept the proprietary nature to avoid clogging up my wifi with a billion stupid devices). Anyway, for just controlling my one piece of hardware that I can't otherwise control, I like this a whole lot. It's yet another app you need, but it's a quick button press or two. I might be interested to do more with the system, but I'm not ready to dive in feet first. ... show more

  • This little hub is so versatile.
Color: Black
I got this hub because I wanted to try the SwitchBot bot and was surprised by how much more it can do. I have some not so smart devices around the house that I wanted to integrate with my smart home devices. The SwitchBot bot(button pusher) seemed like the best option to integrate my dumb fan and air purifier on and off with the tap of my phone or tablet. I soon found that this little thing can do much more than toggle a physical switch on and off. After playing with the app for a bit, I was able to control my fan with the app via the IR blaster feature that comes with the hub. I was also able to import the SwitchBot ecosystem into my Smartthings app as well, further streamlining my smart home automatons. But wait, there’s more! Yes, more features that I didn’t know this hub was able to do. I found that I can also integrate NFC tags and trigger automations with the NFC tags as well. This hub is so awesome, I’m only scratching the tip of the iceberg. The one thing that would push this over the edge would be the integration with Smartthings. Although I am able to control SwitchBot devices in the Smartthings app, some of the features on these devices do not work. The motion and light sensor will only detect motion in the Smartthings app, while in its native ecosystem, the sensor will detect motion as well as light. Maybe future iterations of the software can improve upon this or maybe Matter will remedy this shortcoming. Can’t wait to see what else I can do with this hub. ... show more

  • Added AC to smart home
Color: Black
I saw an advertisement for this product a few years ago and thought it would be nice to add our mini split AC to our smart home products. I have been using Samsung Smartthings for the base of my smart home for a several years and I have to say this isn't the easiest setup. You have to have some basic knowledge to make the Switchbot work correctly. It doesn't recognize several remote controlls so they have to be setup manually. This can be time consuming and frustrating. Unless you have a basic issue, it is hard to find support online. I was able to connect with my Gree AC but it took much longer than what should be necessary. Adding my ceiling fan was a nightmare and I think it was luck that I was able to make it work. Just to reiterate, this isn't for the beginner. ... show more
