  • Fantastic and FUN ! (Series Review)
I want to preface my review by first stating, that through no fault of the author, the Kindle version was poorly formatted, but not to the point of distraction, just not as well formatted as other Kindle offerings. I wanted to review each book read, but it's far more fun doing it as a whole. I'd never heard of Ms. Halliday, but on a whim, I purchased all five (5) books at the same time. From the first page of the first book, "Spying in High Heels," I was hooked. Ms. Halliday has such a gift for portraying her characters, that I felt as though I were the one right in the middle of it all. Her descriptions are vivid, her characters have depth and substance, and the storyline of each of the books was well written, crafted, described and believable. The last book, "Mayhem in High Heels" had laugh out loud funny spots, that truly sent me into gales of laughter. I'm afraid my family thought me slightly nuts as I'd sit outside reading a description of a character, and finding it so darn funny, that I literally couldn't stop laughing. The main character, Maddie, lives in the Los Angeles area, and being a native Californian, I was able to relate to many of her descriptions and locales. That added a dimension for me that some of you might not be able to relate to, but it doesn't take away from the books being well written. Each of the books has a great plot, storyline and they're written in a way that gets you involved and I can't say that I ever actually guessed "who done it," so that made it all the more fun. The books certainly don't have to be read in succession; that's just how I like to do it so that I don't get hooked, then have to wait for months for the next installment. I bought them, and started reading them in order. Each book is its own freestanding story, so it's not like the second one is a continuation of the first one, but reading them in their numerical order makes it a little easier because things that happened in the previous book are referenced, but they don't have any bearing on each book, its storyline or its outcome. The characters are truly funny, as are the predicaments they find themselves in and how they get into and out of them. I enjoyed each and every one of these books, and enjoyed the writing style of Ms. Halliday so much, that I'm certainly going to read more of her offerings. If you're looking for a fun, fast, interesting and funny "who done it" series, this is a must have. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. Thank you for reading my review. ... show more

  • Cute read
I really enjoyed this book and finished it in two nights, flat. The main character is perky, cute and funny. I loved how usually when I read a book, everything is so predictable, not so here, I had no clue who the "bad guy" was, until the very end. Nice flow, that keeps you reading, always something new, just when the story got a little slow and I thought "ok, bedtime". Some turn came up, that kept me up and reading on. I saw in some of the bad reviews, readers said too much fast food, too much detail on clothes... pregnancy test after test... I think that gives a wrong impression, here.... *******possible spoilers***** 1. She does not ( or cannot cook) and is stressed and out investigating, so yeah she stops at taco bell and burger King a few times, throughout the book, and it tells what she orders, nothing more. 2. She is a designer and loves name clothes, so yes she would notice, if someone is wearing a pair of Prada. 3. She did not take pregnancy test after pregnancy test.... She was nervous, and ruined the first 2, the third at her friends did not work, cause it was expired. So the impression of the reviewer that she might be constantly thinking she is pregnant is a little off. ****spoilers***** Just wanted to say that, as I saw it differently, is all. Another thing I saw was the "constant use of Pet names". I did not see that either, There was a couple of times where the Boyfriend calls her Pumpkin, and the cop calls her a pain in the ass in spanish, I did not see constant use of this. Again, I can only speak for myself, but those really bugged me and I had to mention them. I gave 4 stars out of 5, because the book had so much detail and storyline, yet the end felt rushed, as though there was more to the story, but the deadline came and the last few pages were just scribbled to get to the end. A whole book of uncertainty, wondering, guessing, confusion... then suddenly, she takes the test, no baby, breaks up, just like that, and gets the cop... bam bam bam... the end.. that bugged me, but hey, cute book. Especially for the price of 0.00 Dollars :P ... show more

  • Finally! A Rom-com and mystery that really made me laugh!
Finally, I have read the first ever Rom-com/ mystery which actually made me laugh out loud! Spying In High Heels by Gemma Halliday, is listed as a funny romantic mystery. What it really is-- a hilarious romp through Los Angeles, full of misdirection, wacky assumptions and quirky eccentric characters. Like Cannonball Run or similar madcap movies In the 70's and 80's, the humor is slapstick and often politically incorrect, yet a whole lot of fun! I found myself bent over laughing about something on every page. How can I describe Gemma Halliday's audacious cast of characters? Her main character is ditzy and an air-head blonde in many ways but also kind, loyal, and loveable. Surprisingly, I liked her and loved how Gemma peaked away her layers of personality as the book moved along. Think Lucy and Ethel meets Stephanie Plum and you might be close to understanding the main character Maddie and her best friend Dana. Together Maddy and Dana make one assumption after another ,getting further drawn into danger only to escape by sheer dumb luck. And yet in the end Maddy solves the mystery while law enforcement is busy looking the other way. Their romances are train wrecks, yet neither can give up on the idea that happily ever after may just be around the corner. Again, a trait I might find annoying in myself but found cute and loveable in Mandy and Dana. I can see that many may not find Spying in High Heels to be their cup of tea. To me it might be like the reaction I had to Cannonball Run or Caddyshack. I laughed so hard I cried the first time I saw those movies. By the time I saw the 3rd or 4th sequel, however, I had enough of Captain Chaos and dancing gophers to last a lifetime. Right now though, I am ready to give Gemma Halliday and the High Heel Mysteries a fighting chance. We will see how I feel when I get to book 3 or 4! ... show more
