The saving grace of this case is it’s built-in MagSafe compatibility. That aspect of this case works perfectly with Apple’s MagSafe Duo Charger. The phone with this case finds the charger’s sweet spot and sticks to it. But every other aspect of this case is just “meh.” The case itself feels like a slab of cheap hard plastic. I’ve bought my share of inexpensive no-name cases since the original iPhone and none felt as “budget” as this one from a well established brand. It’s slippery, too with no textured grip anywhere on the case. Speck put no thought into making this case grippy or comfortable to hold as they do the Presidio line. Compared to the Caseology Skyfall case, which is a similar priced, but feels good in-hand and has side grips, the Gemshell is an average junk case. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come in a MagSafe variant. The volume and power buttons are easy to manipulate but lack a satisfying tactile click. It’s a rather numb feeling. These areas of the case are softer (guessing TPU) material, a weak point of the case if the phone is dropped as these covers could compress and expose the phone’s edges. Bottom line: Don’t be fooled by the Speck branding here. This is far from its best effort. The MagSafe works as advertised, but everything else about this case is mediocre at best. ... show more

Spec always delivers a great product. The iPhone case I purchased is the MagSafe clear case. It’s a great case. It’s durable and shows off the phone color. My only complaint is the raised bezel on the back camera, it could be a bit more raised. It comes out to the exact raise of the camera lens. I put a lens protector but I’ve broken it 3 times already. The grip could be better, but it isn’t slippery at all. It’s pretty much the same feel on all my Spec clear cases I’ve owned. I’d buy again if I lost this case. ... show more

    • Does just what it needs to do

This case shows off my phone while keeping a low profile. I have dropped my phone onto hard floors several times with no damage. This was worth the price. The rubber edges give me good grip and the see through back shows off the design of the phone and where the MagSafe portion is. Love it.

I liked this case to begin with. It is slim and sleek, and it is sufficient to protect your phone. However, it simply does not last. I am pretty gentle on phones, and after I put the case on, I haven’t taken it off. Should be in great shape, given the light use. It is not, and I haven’t even had it a year (I bought it in March of this year. It is now October). The case is mostly rigid, but there are some flexible parts around the charging port and side buttons. The flexible parts by the side buttons have stretched out. The flexible part around the charging port has completely ripped off. After under a year of use, I’ll have to buy a new case. As someone who hates consumer waste, this is unacceptable. ... show more
