It does work; and for those who complain of the dim spark; that is not a defect or weakness of the tester--it's just what a minimal voltage (see more below) spark plug spark looks like... I ran some tests on the unit and measured it's output at 5 to 7.5 kV; not a lightning bolt, but enough to fire a plug in ambient air--this is not bad! If it fires at 7.5 kV then it will have no problem firing at the 25 to 50+ kV produced by contemporary electronic ignition systems. I.e. It is a good baseline assessment of a plug's "fitness for duty" I few months ago I got a bad plug in a set of 6 I got for my 2012 Infiniti M37. Made me crazy, can't ever remember having a defective new plug before! I eventually determined the plug was bad after 45 minutes of removing it, ensuring it was clean and that the COP was good--and swapping it and the COP to another cylinder. This tester would have saved me that work. In the future I shall test every plug BEFORE even beginning the work! In my testing I also found that it firing rate range for the PUT (Plug-Under-Test) was 120 to 650 Hz: this corresponds to 14400 to 78,000 rpm(!) in a 4 stroke/cycle engine in which each plug fires once in every two crankshaft revolutions. So, 120 firings per second = 7200 firings per minute; and as the plug only fires on every other crank revolution that would be 14,400 rpm To meet the claimed 0 to 6000 rpm "test range" would only require the tester be capable of 0 to 50 firings per second--this is a common error when electronic engineers get involved with motor vehicles. They think in "Mega-events per second" and slowing down to 167 cycles per second (revolutions)(10,000 rpm, which is only 83 plug firings per second) is alien to them... ... show more

I own a boat with a two stroke engine so when it comes to setting gap this thing is an absolute treasure. You can hear the difference in gap on it and that’s a huge plus when it comes to tuning a boat. (Bigger the gap the stronger the sound and better spark quality, too much and you get cut out following with poor spark quality, too little gap and you get a quiet spark followed with cutout.) plus it helps finding fouled plug too ... show more

As most have said, the spark is somewhat difficult to see in the daylight. I don’t view that as an issue. Just flip the light switch. my issue is that the newer??? thinner plugs do not click in and lock into the device. The plug on the left is from my 06 F150. the fatter plug on the right is from my 98 F150. Yes i use the word newer with some sarcasm. the thinner plugs still shows some spark but it does not seat well in the device and i would be hesitant to blame the plug for negative results. ... show more
