This is exactly the recorder you may remember playing in elementary school. I've never had one as an adult but decided to pick this one up to see what I was missing. Turns out, I'm still great at making shrill ear-splitting shrieks come out of this recorder, just like back in the day! It's a nice enough instrument that comes with a cleaning rod and a fabric pouch to store it in. There is also a chart that explains how to (theoretically) make this thing make actual pleasing sounds, but I haven't quite gotten that far yet. Elementary schools have had recorder programs for years, and there's only a few brands that make all of the instruments, probably subsidized a bit by some department to make them even more affordable. When I was a kid they were all black, now they tend to be a tan. They are a fun way to get kids into music and both annoy and make parents proud. This recorder is identical to those. This recorder looks and feels far more expensive than it is. I find it beautiful and now have it displayed in my "music room" (I am definitely on the amateur side of the musician spectrum and most of my musical instruments are for beginners - a ukulele, hand drums, etc.) It sounds like a recorder should and is incredibly easy to learn and play. This would make a great stocking stuffer gift for anyone who enjoys music - and isn't that everyone? This is a basic recorder. The sound is a bit pitchy. This is a good starter instrument for a child/beginner to learn finger movement and finger placement, but the sound quality is just OK. I'd like to rate this 3.5 as slightly above average, but rounded up to 4 stars. Hope this helps! :-)

It's exactly like the boring brown recorder I had when I was in second grade! I got this mainly for nostalgia reasons, but after playing with it for awhile, it got me interested in learning how to play it better! I love the color, and it comes with a cleaning rod, cloth drawstring bag, and fingering charts for German and Baroque style (I have no idea what the difference is, but I will learn!) It works perfectly, sounds like it should. Seems durable, made from heavy duty plastic of some kind. It's shiny, and has a good weight to it. Great value too! ... show more

If your child does not know if they want to play this instrument than yes I would get this to see. I played a recorder since I was 10 and I am now way older. This is not what I was hoping for. It's plastic and the notes are off. Cheaply made. Really not a fan of it and need to look for an all wood one. Worth a shot, but not impressed! ... show more

Great quality for a beginner recorder instrument. I got this for my young toddler. I do not play any musical instruments and I hope to learn together with him. Therefore I cannot comment on the accuracy of the notes and placement of the holes. The recorder comes apart easily and cleans well.     • Sturdy construction but comes apart too easily

We needed a new recorder for my kiddo and I thought this would be a good option. It is, with some caveats: For the price, it's a great beginner recorder for kids. It is easy to clean and feels sturdy in your hand. However, the one we received comes apart *too* easily, and I can only imagine that it'll get easier and easier to disassemble as time goes on. Why is this important? Because you need a perfect tube for the air to travel through, in order to get a nice sound. That's why fingerwork is so important, and I noticed that when the notes were not at the right pitch while playing, it had a lot to do with the assembly of the unit. However: will the kids notice? Probably not, and mine didn't. So as long as you're really only needing a beginner instrument, this should be a good choice for practicing! ... show more
