Top Amazon Reviews

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Sony Lens is generally highly praised by users for its sharp, flawless optics and valuable contribution to both nature and portrait photography. The lens performs excellently, with a few remarks centered on autofocus issues. It is recommended that for the best result, a ring light is used, especially for smaller subjects or in less bright conditions. Some reviewers also suggested that this lens might be a bit heavy for handheld shoots and would function best used with a tripod.

Pros

  • 👏 Superior image quality and color capture.
  • 🌸 Works exceptionally well for macro and portrait photography.
  • ⚙️ Manual/Auto focus switch is appreciated by users.
  • 💪 Users appreciated its robust, well-built structure.

Cons

  • 🥴 Some autofocus issues reported.
  • ⚖️ Might be considered a bit heavy for handheld photography.
  • 💡 Requires good lighting or a ring light for capturing smaller subjects.
  • 💰 Pricey compared to some other models on the market.

Should I Buy It?

Given the product's efficiency in image capturing and robust quality, it can be recommended for purchase, especially for those who engage in macro and portrait photography. Its few drawbacks are worth considering. However, given the overwhelmingly positive response to the lens, it appears to be a very good investment for avid photographers.

  • Great image quality!
Style: Lens + Ring Light Kit
When people say this lens is sharp, they aren't kidding. The first picture I took was a pine cone just to test it out - auto focus locked on (though it's not the fastest and hunts a little) and produced a beautiful image without any editing. This is a versatile option, great for close up shots, but I can see it working well for portraits too. Good build quality - feels substantial, and I did drop it once on hard dirt with no ill affect. (Note to self: Don't forget to zip up the back pack!!) I like how the auto focus can be switched on or off by pulling out/pushing in the lens - very convenient, except it doesn't work if you have the lens hood stored on the lens because this blocks access. For image quality I'd say this rivals or comes very close to my GM lenses, but for a lot less money. The items that come with are fairly cheap quality, but considering the price is the same as a stand alone lens, I'm ok with that. ... show more

  • As fantastic as advertised!
Style: Lens Only
This lens is everything everyone says it is. Tack sharp, durable build, great features and terrific bokeh. The auto focus hunts a little more than I'd like, even with the limiter switches on. But overall, it's still better than my zooms. The push to lock auto-manual focus ring is an awesome feature though. I wish more modern lenses had this. It has a great DoF and, as I said, the bokeh is creamy smooth with beautiful, round bokeh balls. When using as a portrait lens, you can find no better - great sharpness, color rendering and DoF. When using as a macro, it's a little on the dark side. If working close, like with insects, you will definitely need supplemental light, even in full sunlight. The build quality is superb and the lens feels substantial in your hand - like an old metal Nikon lens. Overall, if you need a razor sharp macro and portrait lens, this is the lens you're looking for! ... show more

  • Awesome lens (if you get one that works)
Style: Lens Only
Edited: Bought this same lens from camera store, dont trust the transport anymore. Worked flawlessly. Picture quality is amazing. Bokeh is very nice and easily achieved. Ring light is necessary if you want to shoot bugs or tiny things unless it's very bright. Still bit scared about the build quality. I've had other sony lenses and never had problems. DMF focus mode (in camera) helps if autofocus is too iffy. I feel that or manual focus is needed for bug shots. Autofocus will suffice for anything bigger or farther away. Original: Just received this sweet macro lens. Hook it ip to 7RM3. Camera display shows "flicker". F number shows --. There's no auto focus. Turning off auto stability. Testing with different focus limits. Nope. Nothing. Happens. Lens doesn't make a sound either. Switch to manual. Also defective. Doesn't focus at all. Oh bummer, like so many 1* reviews here, I've gotten a dud. It was shipped in a original box, looks unopened. Box wrapped in a plastic bag. No extra insulation, bubble wrap. Nothing. Not a conciving way of shipping expensive lenses. Returning as defective and trying another one. Was really hoping getting some bug shots. ... show more

  • Love it! A very competent lens
Style: Lens Only
I am a hobby photographer and this is absolutely my favorite lens. It actually got me taking more macro photos. At first, I thought the Sliding Focus Ring was a gimmick but I was so wrong. I use it to select manual or auto focus every time I’m out shooting. The preview function took some getting used to but once I learned it, the magnifier got me nailing down some super sharp shots on various parts of plants and flowers. The autofocus can be a bit temperamental so if you’re not doing manual focus already for your macro shots than you’ll get your practice in for sure. Overall, a great lens to use. It’s sharp and has some really great features. ... show more

  • An Unbelievable Lens.
Style: Lens Only
Outstanding. Simply outstanding. This is probably the sharpest lens I have every owned. (I've own a bunch including Nikon, Leitz and Zeiss on a Hasselblad). Its fast, easy to hold, well balanced, focuses quickly, IS works well and it is Sharp. Edge to edge sharp wide open or stopped down all the way. It is a big lens about 5" long and weighing nearly a pound and a half. The lens focuses quickly thanks to the focus limiter switch. In macro you will want to focus manually. Besides macro work it is an unforgiving portrait lens - seeing every pore is not always the best thing. Its size and heft machete a little intimidating. Just as an FYI DxO (they test and ran optics) rates the Sony 90mm f/2.8 as the 2nd best lens out of their work of 4,500 lenses. IMO its worth every penny. ... show more

  • Love it!
Style: Lens + Ring Light Kit
Extremely sharp, great focusing - AF and manual. The only thing I don't care for is, in AF mode, having to use the manual switch to set how far away from the subject you are. 3 choices: 0.28m - .5m, .5m - infinity and Full. Theoretically, you could leave it set to full and wait while it hunts for the subject at any distance. I found Full only works from about a meter and beyond, and quickly a few meters+. If you want the AF to snap to focus almost instantly, set the switch to your working distance. It doesn't work well when subject is 2 or 3m away, or about .5m away - which position is going to work? In that case, find high contrast spot or use MF. Just takes some getting used to. ... show more
