For off-road I was looking for a set that stayed organized and was durable. Bingo! All on point here. I still have a smaller set I bought 40 years ago. Those still work well, I disassembled my first engine A V-8 Chevy with a 3/8” ratchet with it. I removed the large head bolts and main caps using a 2’ pipe over the ratchet handle. The SK Mechanics Tool Set, 1/4" & 3/8" & 1/2" Drive Socket with 216-P Ratchet, 149-Piece, SAE & Metric, SuperKrome Finish, with Storage Suitcase is a comprehensive, serious tool set that includes almost everything a machine shop, repair shop, or mobile repair service needs to complete any job they run across. It is a kit that offers metric and standard sockets in a wide array of sizes that will work for multiple types of fasteners including deep sockets. The sockets have SK’s Suregrip design which is similar to the Flank Drive that was pioneered many years ago. As a Certified Master Automotive Technician I worked with this design for decades and it is far superior to the traditional design most sockets and wrenches have. The design grips on the flank of the nut or bolt head instead of the corners and gives a much more secure hold on the fastener. I have had many instances where a standard socket or wrench has sheared off the corners and a flank drive tool was able to easily remove it. The set has ¼, 3/8, and ½ inch drive sockets in shallow and deep styles and has overlap so there is a choice of size when you are at the upper and lower limit of fastener size. The 3 size ratchets have pretty fine teeth which gives you an advantage in tight spots as you don’t have to move the ratchet as far to get a new grip. The quick release button and ball make it easier to change sockets, especially the smaller ones. The kit also includes useful sets of both metric and standard hex wrenches with ball ends. These are really handy and are in much more use today than 50 years ago. Further, the set includes a magnetic nut driver and a wide array of replaceable tips. My feeling is that this kit is designed for medium duty use and will work well for the types of use I listed above and includes everything a home owner would need. The plastic suitcase that holds the entire kit adds value as it keeps everything in place and makes it easy to notice when an item is missing so you don’t leave something at the job site. ... show more

    • No longer American made, but still good quality
I was sad to see these are indeed made in China. Given the price of this kit would normally maybe get you a rail of sockets, it's a good kit for the price and quality. The ratchet is decently defined and feels durable but that remains to be seen. The sockets fit well together and the finish seems to be well done. This kit is comprehensive enough for most things an average person would need to do without too much useless pieces. I especially like the hex keys. ... show more

SK Tools is an American tool manufacturer. They also have a line of imported tools. This set is one of the imported sets. With that being said, the quality of these is well beyond your standard Chinese cheap tool sets. At 149 pieces, this is a very comprehensive set that has 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" drive ratchets and sockets, a multi-bit screwdriver, and Allen wrenches. ... show more

    • Great quality tool brand from back in the day. This kit has all the basic hand tools
I have some SK tools from my dad that were from the 80s. He was a big fan of SK tools which was in the same level Snapon, Matco. This tool set had all the hand tools you need for most automotive job. When I go to a junkyard to get some parts I bring this set, an impact, hammer and a couple wrenches, pliers & a couple other odds & ends. You get the 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 ratchets. I wish it came with an adapter for 1/4 to 3/8 which I use a lot but other then that you get everything you need and this set is really nice quality. ... show more

    • Substantial kit
I had a couple old Ratchet sets that made up my SAE and Metric kit. It was annoying keeping both of them on hand and remembering which box meant what. I was in the market when this fell into my lap. SK is a heritage brand that was snatched up by Greatstar and its anyones guess if this kit in particular is made out of their USA plants or one of the others in many other countries. I can say I personally do not put much weight on where they are manufactured and I let the tools performance and lifespan speak for itself. These are made with Chrome Vanadium Steel and the three separate sockets I have used all performed like the old sets I have had. Nothing came with any blemishes or surface rust. There is a nice little sheet of foam that I am bound to lose or simpyl toss out in a matter of weeks but so far I have tried to keep it in there. Easy to recommend this kit if you want to spend a little extra money on a full set. ... show more
